Jay Upadhyay is a well-known Indian actor who works primarily in Gujarati films. He rose to fame playing the role of Pranav Sheth in the 2020 hit Hindi web series Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story.

Jay was very active in stage performances during school and college. He first appeared on stage in the eighth grade, when he performed a one-act play. He loved the experience and knew he wanted to be an actor. After completing college in 2001, Jay joined the theatre company of Manoj Shah, a renowned theatre director, actor and producer who owns the production company Ideas Unlimited. Jay idolized him and worked with him in many famous plays; one of which was the biographical play Mareez, which has been running at Prithvi Theatre since 2004.
Jay has an undying love for theatre. He believes theatre is the purest form of acting as it involves live performances without retakes. Jay believes every new actor should do theatre for at least five years as it really helps hone their craft.
Movie
Jay made his screen debut in the 2012 Gujarati film Kevi Rite Jaish, which he says ushered in a new era of urban Gujarati cinema. Jay has been praised for his performances in many Gujarati films and plays. His performance in another Gujarati film Paaghadi (2018) earned him the Best Comedy Actor award at the 18th Annual Intermedia Gujarati Screen and Stage Awards.
Jay made a comedy film Tu Hai Mera Sunday in 2016 which won the Cinequest Film Festival Audience Award. The film was screened at the BFI Southbank Theatre during the 2016 London Film Festival and was well received by the audience.

Jay has played many roles on television. Jay has acted in the famous play Bhamasha, which is based on the life of Bhama Shah, a famous general, minister and close aide of Maharana Pratap. He has also appeared as a guest on the famous Indian TV show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah to promote his play Bhamasha.
His breakthrough role came in the 2020 Indian web series Scam 1992, directed by Hansal Mehta. Jay’s character in the show was inspired by Ketan Parekh, a former stockbroker who was convicted of stock manipulation in 2008. In an interview, he described his experience of working with Hansal Mehta, saying,
Hansal sir loves serious films but he also loves pranks and bullies, but in a hilarious way. He is naturally a very funny guy and is known for serious content, which is quite ironic.”
