Bagwell began his football career as a third baseman in the 1989 amateur draft at the University of Hartford. Bagwell excelled in every aspect of the game, including hitting, running, on-base capacity, fielding and pitching. A champion among the all-time greats of his era, he posted no fewer than 4.7 wins above replacement (RAT) in each of his previous 11 seasons, according to Baseball-Reference.com. His best season was 1994. As the fourth consecutive NL MVP in history, Bagwell set the record for fewest plate appearances to score both 100 runs batted in and 100 runs scored, batting .750, the most in the NL since 1925. and hit.368.
He finished second in MVP voting in 1999, delivering his second stellar 30-30 season. Jeff is the first player in MLB history to have six consecutive seasons with 30 grand slams, 100 runs scored, 100 RBI and 100 runs scored. He is also the sixth player to have 300 homers, 1,000 runs scored and 1,000 RBI in his first ten seasons.
