Jelly Roll Makes His SNL Debut as Hacks' Hannah Einbinder Cameos to Introduce Him with Host Jean Smart

The musician (39) did his thing Saturday night live made his debut on September 28, when he was the musical guest during the 50th season premiere of the comedy series, hosted by Jean Smart.

Jelly Roll is the first the performance contained a surprise episode in the form of Smart Hacks actress Hannah Einbender, who appeared alongside the host to introduce the singer for his song “Liar” from his upcoming album, Beautifully broken.

Dressed in a gray embellished denim jacket, black top and black pants, Jelly Roll showcased his impressive vocals in a performance that featured his band’s unique lineup lined up on each side behind him, with the singers then standing on a slightly raised platform behind each line of tape.

Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason Bradley DeFord, later sang “Winning Streak,” another track from his soon-to-be-released LP.

The star had previously expressed her enthusiasm for his SNL performance, writing in the post, “SNL season 50 premiere. BRB will cry for hours and call every family member I have. Bringing therapeutic music to my favorite show ever. God is good.”

While talking to PEOPLE i Entertainment Weekly on the red carpet ahead of the 2024 Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 15, the father-of-two said he specifically wanted to jump into the television series so he could return to the awards show in the future, after first calling the event “the coolest experience .”

“That’s crazy, man,” he said. “Now I want to be on a TV show so I can come here every year, man. I call all my country music friends and tell them, ‘We missed the mark, man. We got to be at the Emmys.’ ”

During the annual awards, Jelly Roll performed as part of the In Memoriam segment, where he sang his original song “I Am Not Okay”.

Saturday night live Announces season 50 lineup including Jean Smart, Ariana Grande and Chappelle Roan

SNL announced the cast for its landmark season earlier this month.

Returnees Marcello Hernandez, Michael Longfellow and Devon Walker were promoted to main cast after two years each as featured players, while Punkie Johnson, Chloe Troast and Molly Kearney stepped down. Ashley Padilla, Emil Wakim and Jane Wickline, meanwhile, have been added to the sketch comedy series’ roster.

Michael Che, Mikey Day, Andrew Dismukes, Chloe Fineman, Heidi Gardner, James Austin Johnson, Colin Jost, Ego Nwodim, Sarah Sherman, Kenan Thompson and Bowen Yang round out the rest of the cast.

Other presenters and musical guests announced so far for SNLSeason 50 features Nate Bargatze with Coldplay, Ariana Grande with Stevie Nicks, Michael Keaton with Billie Eilish and John Mulaney with Chappelle Roan

Saturday night live airs at 11:30 PM ET weekends on NBC. Jelly Roll’s latest album, Beautifully brokenwill be available for purchase and streaming on October 11.
