Jelly Roll Wins New Artist of the Year at CMAs Weeks Before 39th Birthday: ‘Something Poetic’

The country singer took home the CMA New Artist of the Year award at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Wednesday, beating out fellow nominees Zach Bryan, Parker McCollum, Megan Moroney and Hailey Whitters.

During his acceptance speech, the “I Need a Favor” singer, 38, waved his award in the air and said how grateful he was: “Nashville! I only got a second, and I’m going to say a lot, and I’m sorry.”

“The quickest thing I can say is thank you to the publishers, Stoney Creek Management…you saved my life. Country radio, what’s up baby?! I have a thousand people to thank, but most importantly, my master and my wife. I love you so much. Changed you are my life,” he said.

He even sweetly greeted his fellow nominees: “Megan, Parker, Hailey, I love you all, we’re friends. Zach Bryan, I think you’re one of the hottest things in the world, not just country music, you deserve this as much as anyone . I love you. I’m glad we’re sitting there having fun the rest of the night, baby.”

The singer-songwriter also spoke about how special it was to win the award, as he turns 39 in December.

“There’s something poetic about a 39-year-old winning New Artist of the Year. I don’t know where you are in life or what you’re going through, but I want to tell you to keep going, baby. I want to tell you that success is on the other side. I want to tell you that it’s going to be okay,” he said.

He concluded, “What’s in front of you is much more important than what’s behind you. Let’s have fun, Nashville!”

Jelly Roll got a lot of fanfare with their album last year Ballads of the broken and his single “Son of a Sinner”, which became his first top 5 hit on The Board Hot Country Songs chart. This year, he continued his streak of success with a new album, Whitsitt Chapeland hit songs including “Save Me” with Lainey Wilson and “Wild Ones” with Jessie Murph.

The 2023 CMA Awards, hosted by Luke Bryan and Peyton Manning, air live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on ABC, and the ceremony will stream exclusively on Hulu on Thursday.
