Stephen Moyer Confesses He’s Obsessed with Pickleball: ‘I Can’t Believe It Got Me’ (Exclusive)

Stephen Moyer has a passion – a passion for pie.

“It’s stupid,” says the British actor (54) angrily about his obsession. “Just stupid. Yeah, I’m part of the ‘dink’ cult. I can’t believe that hit me,” he says with a laugh.

Moyer — who now stars in the Sexy beastthe Paramount+ series that acts as a prequel to the 2001 gangster film starring Ben Kingsley — says the game was instrumental in cutting time during the recent SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.

“It actually kind of held me together,” admits the former Real blood star, who lives in the US with his star-turned-wife Anna Paquin and their 12-year-old twins.

He explains, “I’d take the kids to school, and then I’d go play pickleball. And then when the picket lines opened up, I’d pick up picket lines, and then I’d go back and play pickleball and then the school would pick up. It was like school , pickles, strike, pickles, school.”

Nor was it the case that the change from summer sun to winter time prevented him from playing: “The other day we were shoveling snow off our fields. It was about 34 degrees and the wind was blowing the ball everywhere. But we played anyway.”

Moyer, who also directs two episodes Sexy beast — in which he plays East London gangster Teddy Bass — says his love of the game probably stemmed from his youth playing table tennis in Essex, just outside of London.

“I grew up playing table tennis, and I find very few things as satisfying as when you play really good, competitive table tennis, just the back and forth of it all. Backhand, forehand, backhand forehand. I love it.”

As for tennis snobs and cucumber haters? Moyer guesses they just haven’t tried it yet.

“Or of course,” he jokes, “those who live next to the palace.”
