Meet the fashion designer sister of the “Shallow” singer, Natali Germanotta
Lady Gaga has a very important little monster in her life: sister Natali Germanotta.
Natali supported her older sibling long before Gaga became a household name.
“I was in high school when she was playing at places like the Knitting Factory,” she said Interview 2011. “I remember my dad and I helping her pack her things and carry her grand electric piano down the stairs. It could be irritating at times, but the pride I feel for her really outweighs all of those things.”
The fashion designer and founder of Topo Studio has created some of her sister’s more recent stage looks, including outfits for the 2022 Chromatica Ball and Gaga’s Las Vegas residency, as well as one of Gaga’s 2022 Grammys dresses.
But that doesn’t mean that Natali always agrees with Gaga’s tailoring choices. 2011, she said Teen Vogue, “Some of the things she wears I would say, ‘No, never.’ ”
Luckily, there’s an advantage to having a sister known for her wild athletic looks. “Whenever I wear something crazy and my dad gets in the way, I’m like, ‘Well, at least I’m not going out with red cookies,'” Natali told the magazine. “And he will say, ‘Good reason.’ ”

She grew up in New York

Natali Veronica Germanotta was born on March 10, 1992 in New York. She and Gaga, who is six years older, grew up on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
Both attended high school at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Monastery. Gaga opened up about the bullying, which eventually helped her fall in love with her A star is born character Ally.
“What I had to do was go back deeper into my childhood, my high school years, when I was bullied and made fun of for having big dreams,” Gaga told PEOPLE in 2018.
However, Natali had a very different high school experience as Gaga’s hit single, “Just Dance,” was released in 2008, when Natali was a sophomore. Because of the popular tune, it was difficult to stay in the public eye, but Natali had a good experience in a private school for girls.
“I’ll have those friends forever. My sister and I were in different classes with different girls,” she said Teen Vogue.
She is a fashion designer

Natali decided to make her own way in fashion, rather than using her sister’s connections, and graduated from Parsons School of Design in New York in 2014.
As a student, she created costumes for an off-Broadway show Simon says and interned for Allison Parris, according to British Vogue.
“Natalie has a sharper sense of style like her sister,” Parris said WWD in 2011, adding, “She is so sweet and so easy to work with. She’s such a great girl.”
Natali later worked as an assistant to fashion designer Brandon Maxwell, Gaga’s stylist and former Haus of Gaga fashion director, and in 2021 founded her own line, Topo Studio.
A New Yorker got one big leg – or foot, actually. For her performance of “Born This Way” and “You and I” in 2011 The The Oprah Winfrey Show, Gaga turned one of Natalie’s school projects, a huge stiletto statue, into a piano. The moment was a big surprise for Natali, significant Teen Vogue, “I was at my parents’ house sobbing, like, ‘Oh my God.’ ”
She appeared in Lady Gaga’s music videos
While still in high school, Natali appeared as one of Gaga’s cellmates in the 2009 music video for “Telephone.” Nine years later, she reappeared in the music video for “Joanne (Where Do You Think You’re Goin’?),” where she can be seen playing pool.
In addition to her cameo roles in the music video, Natali can be seen in the 2017 documentary. Gaga: Five foot two.
She created clothes for Lady Gaga’s tours and the Grammys

Lady Gaga proudly wore many looks designed by her sister.
Recent collaborations with Topo Studio include a 2022 stage look Chromatica Ball Tour, residency in Las Vegas, Lady Gaga: Jazz & Pianoand Gaga’s performance with the Rolling Stones in October 2023.
Natali has styled Gaga for off-stage moments as well, including in 2014 Harper’s Bazaar expansion and campaign for Don Perignon 2023, and she worked in the costume department at 2018. A star is born.
The “Rain on Me” singer also invited her sister to the Grammys in 2022. Of the three dresses Gaga wore to the ceremony, one was a teal crepe back satin silk velvet gown with a feather capelet designed by Topo Studio.
“Thank you @topostudiony for handcrafting me this beautiful 👗 🥰,” Gaga wrote on Instagram the next day.
She played a big part in Gaga’s Super Bowl performance

Natali worked on her sister’s wardrobe team for the 2017 Super Bowl LI halftime performance.
She had a part in more than the costumes, because she came up with the idea of the “Bad Romance” singer flying over the audience via cables. Gaga told Boston’s Mix 104.1 that she remembers her sister suggesting, “I know, let’s hang you in the air!”
After Gaga’s performance, Natali was spotted backstage giving Gaga a big hug. Their parents were also in Houston to support their girls.
“We are extremely proud and honored to have our entire family here,” Cynthia said Party tonight.
She received a vote at the Oscars
In 2019, Gaga won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for the song “Shallow”. When receiving the award, the teary-eyed singer sweetly sent Natali off.
“To my sister, my soul mate, I love you,” Gaga said on stage.
The Germanotta sisters made their first red carpet appearance at the 2011 CFDA Fashion Awards in New York, where Gaga accepted the Fashion Icon award. A few years later, they posed backstage at Brandon Maxwell’s 2016 New York Fashion Week show, and in 2017, Natali joined her parents, Cynthia and Joe Germanotta, at the world premiere of the film Gaga: Five foot two during the Toronto International Film Festival.

The Grammy winner showed up at her sister’s graduation in 2010 in a rhinestone bodysuit and beekeeper-inspired headdress.
“The teachers said, ‘Oh my God, I can’t handle this family,'” Natali said Teen Vogue. “She asked me, ‘Should I dress really conservatively and not look like myself, or should I go overboard and freak everyone out?’ And I said: ‘The latter, definitely the latter.’ ”
Natali herself was not inclined, she designed her own avant-garde dress with a graduation cap on the sleeve.
She designed the Monster Doll with Lady Gaga
Monster High collaborated with Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation in 2016 on a Lady Gaga-inspired Zomby Gaga doll.
The doll was styled by Natali to pay tribute to Zombie Boy in the “Born This Way” music video. Gaga said she was “so proud of her sister” and “excited to be spreading the values of love, kindness and courage to young people around the world.”
She had a pet lizard
One of the biggest inspirations in Natalie’s life was a four-legged creature — her pet lizard Phinneas.
She said Interview that he was a constant source of inspiration “sitting on my shoulder while I do my homework”.
Phinneas accompanied Natali to her 2011 Teen Vogue filming, where she gave her pet a kiss on the lips that sent shivers down the spine of the crew.
