Jenna Ortega Believes She Auditioned for Zendaya’s Role in Dune When She Was 15: ‘Everything Was Very Secret’

Jenna Ortega thinks she may have auditioned for Dune.

In a new interview with BuzzFeed published on Monday, August 26, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice actress, 21, shared why she thinks she may have been up for the role in 2021, which eventually went to Zendaya.

About halfway through the nearly 12-minute clip, the young star (who played with a group of dachshund puppies during the interview) was asked what role people would be surprised to hear she auditioned for.

“I think I auditioned for Dune when I was about 15 years old,” Ortega said with a smile.

She added that she is a huge fan of the franchise and is “really excited” because Denis Villeneuve is “one of my favorite filmmakers”.

The Your alum admitted that she is pretty sure that she and Challengers star, 27, were up for the same role.

“I think it was Chani. I think it was Zendayin — but they didn’t say that. Everything was very secretive,” said Ortega.

On some projects, it is not unusual for an actor to not know what role or film he is auditioning for; they may be given a completely different scene or character to play.

Dune was originally released in December 1984. The film, directed by David Lynch, starred Patrick Stewart, Sting and others. Actress Sean Young first played Chani in a sci-fi drama.

In the 2021 remake, Zendaya took the reins as Chani alongside Timothée Chalamet, who was cast as Paul Atreides. The couple reunited for Dina: The second partwhich was published in March 2024.

The second part brought in $711.8 million at the box office.

Elsewhere in an interview with BuzzFeed, Ortega recalled her favorite behind-the-scenes memory from filming Beetlejuice Beetlejuice — a sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 film bug juice.

In the remake, Ortega plays Astrid Deetz, daughter of Lydia Winona Ryder.

“I really like the climax of the third act, just because we have a big scene in the church. There was so much going on. We filmed it for about three weeks, everyone is in it,” she said. “It was a lot of fun to shoot, but also to go into the underworld for the first time and realize that we kind of had to walk at an angle.”

She also admitted that she “got weirdly shy” when she first met the film’s lead star, Michael Keaton.

“But he’s so sweet, he’s so funny, he’s so charming, he’s so professional — I feel like I’ve learned so much, even just watching him,” Ortega said. “It was really weird to see him become Beetlejuice because he was unrecognizable.”

The actress continued: “It was the first time I’ve really seen someone completely disappear. They weren’t involved themselves, so that was pretty special.”

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be released in theaters on September 6, 2024.
