Jenna Ortega Reveals She Was Sent Explicit AI Images of Herself as a Teen on Social Media: ‘It’s Terrifying’

Jenna Ortega shares her experiences on the dark side of the Internet.

The Wednesday star, 21, opened up about her feelings on AI and social media in the latest episode Interview podcast with The New York Timespublished on August 24. There she emphasized the negative effect she saw with these tools as an actress.

“I hate artificial intelligence,” Ortega said in the podcast. “… Did I love being 14 years old [years old] and make a Twitter account because I had to, and see the dirty edited content of me as a child? Not. It’s terrifying. It is corrupt.”

“That is wrong. It’s disgusting,” she added. “… However, here is the problem. We opened Pandora’s box. Well, it is what it is. It’s out now. We will have to deal with the consequences.”

X (formerly Twitter) did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment. (Platforms like X and others say they are taking steps to prevent the spread of offensive content.)

On the same podcast, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice The actress went on to say that she decided to delete X because people were sending her explicit pictures of themselves.

“One of the first actually, the first DM I opened when I was 12 years old was an unsolicited photo of male genitalia, and that was just the beginning of what was to come,” Ortega said.

“I finished erasing about two, three years ago because of the influx, after [Wednesday] out, of these absurd pictures and photos,” she continued. “They’re just repulsive, and I was already in a confused state that I just deleted it because it was unnecessary and I didn’t need it.”

Ortega said people told her she needed to keep the account to “build up” her “image,” but the graphic images helped solidify her decision to delete X.

“I would make political statements or just personal statements or just talk about excitement for work, and then I was greeted by these things. And it was just gross, and it made me feel bad. That made me feel uncomfortable – she said.

“It’s awful. … So one day I just woke up and thought, ‘Oh, I don’t need this anymore.’ So I dropped it,” she added.

When asked on the podcast if she was still learning to “protect myself,” Ortega agreed, saying, “I’m still learning.”

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be released in theaters on September 6, 2024.
