Jennie Garth Spends Easter Handing Out Meals in LA's Skid Row: 'So Full of Joy and Hope'

Jennie Garth is spending some time giving back to the homeless community in Los Angeles ahead of Easter Sunday.

On Friday, Beverly Hills, 90210 alum, 51, appeared at the Los Angeles Mission for their annual Easter event, joining other celebrity volunteers to hand out meals to the homeless community on Skid Row.

Garth, who appears alongside celebrities such as Nick Cannon, Denise Richards, Scheana Shay and her ex 90210 colleague Ian Ziering, spoke with PEOPLE before the lunch event to discuss why she’s passionate about giving back to the LA community — as well as why she’s brought in some special guests this year.

“The Mission is something of a cornerstone of Los Angeles and it’s an honor to be a part of helping to provide services,” said Garth, referring to the Easter-themed event. “It’s always an honor to come and help. Just to walk through the building — it’s so full of joy and hope and people are just happy to be here and celebrate Easter.”

“There is music, haircuts, balloons, carrots”, she continued describing the atmosphere. “I mean, it’s so fun and festive there and it just makes you feel good to be a part of it.”

Marking with Small country the star of the service event were her three daughters, Luca, 26, Lola, 21, and Fiona, 17 — all of whom she shares with ex-husband Peter Facinelli. The actress added that it is important for her to show her children why it is important to “pay it forward” when it comes to community service.

“Every time I volunteer, I try to bring as many of my kids as possible because they like to give back and we like to do it together,” Garth said. “And I think it’s just a good thing to keep, to keep in mind the importance of giving back and serving. You know, we’re so lucky and it’s very important to me to pay it forward.”

Garth also talked about the importance of hanging out with her 90120 family — especially Ziering, the actress said was “the highlight of my day, seeing Ian.”

“He didn’t even recognize my one of my daughters because they grow up so fast,” she said of keeping in touch with her former colleague. “It’s crazy just seeing our kids grow up.”

“We have a chain of acting texts that will always ask each other questions,” she revealed about herself 90210 castmates, telling PEOPLE that the students are always asking each other what shows they’re working on and getting life updates from each other.

“[I’m] keep in touch with Ian because he just annoys me,” she added with a laugh.

When asked about another relationship with longtime friend and former co-star Tori Spelling, she added that the two had a friendship that was “kind of unbreakable.”

“We bonded — forged a strong, unique friendship at such a young age and that kind of bond never goes away,” she said of Spelling, who filed for divorce from her husband Dean McDermott on Friday after 18 years of marriage. .

“… I have always stood by her, behind her, supported her and will always do so,” she finished.
