Jennifer Garner Says She Copied a Famous Costar's Order the First Time She Tried Coffee: 'I Could Taste My Heartbeat'

Jennifer Garner had a heart-pounding experience when she tried coffee for the first time.

During the performance at The Kelly Clarkson Show on Thursday, Oct. 3, Garner, 52, shared a funny story about how she had “a very specific first coffee day in my life.”

As Alias alum and Clarkson, 42, sipping from their cups of coffee, Garner recounted a time about 30 years ago when she was living in New York, working at a restaurant and auditioning for acting jobs. She was cast in an episode Law and order to play a would-be lover opposite star Benjamin Bratt.

Before filming, Bratt, 60, suggested the two meet for coffee to get to know each other before shooting their scenes. Despite never drinking coffee before, Garner — who was in her early 20s at the time — told Bratt, “Oh yeah, absolutely.”

“I was very grown-up,” she told Clarkson, adding in an exaggerated “grown-up” voice, “Yes, of course, coffee is exactly which I would like to have.”

Garner and Bratt met and Miss Congeniality the star ordered a double latte with a topping.

“So that was three shots of espresso in a latte!” Garner explained to Clarkson. “And I said: ‘I will do the same.’ I’m sure I put a cup of sugar in it.”

As if Garner hadn’t already hit her caffeine quota, Bratt then told her, “I’ll have another,” and she replied, “Yeah, sounds good,” and followed suit.

She said that after all the coffee, she felt “so nervous” that she had to cancel an audition she had scheduled for that day.

“You almost probably had a heart attack,” Clarkson suggested, prompting Garner to reply, “I could feel like I could feel my heart beating, you know?”

While it is Deadpool & Wolverine Zvjezda’s first encounter with coffee was difficult, and then she became a big fan of the drink. In April, she even joked with PEOPLE that her “oldest, best relationship” is with coffee.

“If I could marry coffee, I would,” she said at the time. – I like coffee.

She noted that she likes to mix up her coffee routine, as she shared some of her favorite orders. “I almost always have a cappuccino with almond milk, but sometimes I go for a flat white and sometimes I go for a cortado,” she said.

And just like her first coffee experience with Bratt, she doesn’t stop at just one cup.

“I always do a super early workout, and I need a coffee before I start—which is usually an Americano,” Garner told PEOPLE. “After I work out, I feel like I deserve a reward, so then I’ll have my cappuccino. And then I’ll probably have another coffee mid-morning, and then I’m done for the day. If I have one later, it’s decaf.”

Garner’s teenage daughter Violet shares her mother’s passion for coffee. The Family switch star said the 18-year-old took three of her six profiles on her KitchenAid coffee machine at home.

“She always says, ‘I like more water in this. I like this extra hot.’ It’s very classy,” Garner said. “She’s so specific because she’s cool. If you’re 18, you’re super cool.”
