When she was just 15 years old, Jennifer disappeared from her home in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1987. Stephen’s belief that his parents, Margie and Ron Pandos, are responsible is the main theme of the first two episodes. It’s tragic how the case tore the family apart; Margie never met her grandchildren and Stephen is still trying to figure out what happened to make sure her daughters live in a safe environment.
During the documentary series, Ron and Margie are interviewed and both deny any involvement. But it turns out that Ron, a Vietnam vet with PTSD and a history of domestic abuse, used to get angry and aggressive towards his children, according to Stephen, who said his mother covered up the attack.
He states, “My mother never protected me from my father.” “My mother avoided my father when he got angry and violent.” In the original investigation, Stephen and the police suspected that Ron’s irrational anger and violent temper led Ron to attack and kill Jennifer, and that Margie helped cover it up.
The unusual behavior of the parents is the main culprit for this. When Jennifer first disappeared, they found a note at the foot of her daughter’s bed, scrawled in scrambled handwriting. Ron and Margie were told to go about their day and not to worry.
It began in the third person: “Your daughter is with me. She is fine. She needs some time apart because she has problems. I’m fine, I just need some time to think, she continues, switching to the first person with the same letter.
You both need to report to work tomorrow because I will do my best to contact you. I’ll call one of you at work; I won’t call you at home.
He left behind many of his possessions was one of the other incorrect details. Finding out that her teenage daughter had disappeared from her bedroom in the middle of the night with a note telling them not to tell the police would cause most parents great concern.
However, an earlier part of the documentary reveals that it took Margie and Ron three days to call the police while notifying friends and family that Jennifer was sick or away from home. “We really don’t know what happened in those three days,” said James City County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Wendi Reed, who worked on the case from 2006 to 2009.
