Jeremiah Brent Recalls Emotional Moment with Husband Nate Berkus After Buying Back Their NYC Penthouse (Exclusive)

Jeremiah Brent’s life has come full circle.

In a new interview with PEOPLE, the interior designer and TV personality — whose new book, The space that holds youout Tuesday — opens up about finding his own path over the past decade as he welcomed family with husband Nate Berkus.

After selling their beloved Fifth Avenue home in 2016 to move to Los Angeles, the couple (who are parents to daughter Poppy, 9, and son Oskar, 5) bought their “forever home” in 2021.

“It’s a big deal. Look, I’m 13 years younger and I was just starting out [my career] when we met. My design company was in complete disarray, I was taking on every project I could,” Brent, 39, recalls. “But I always stayed that way wanting to make sure I really carved out my own existence within ours as a family, and Nate was always the best support.”

When they returned to the penthouse in New York, “I had a great moment of pride because there was a moment when he looked at me and said, ‘We couldn’t do this right now without you.’ And that was a beautiful moment, knowing that where we are in this season of our lives, not only were we equal, but we were coming back in such a big way because of all that work,” Brent adds. “It feels good to look around the house and see our past and our present and hopefully our future.”

Brent further details his family’s journey with the New York home in his new book, which he wrote during the process of purchasing the property.

“Most people let it go, but this house was much more than just a home for us. It was a symbol of a certain time in our lives, not just professionally…but I remember sitting in that house and imagining this big life together, whether it was having children or writing our wedding vows or dinner parties,” he says. “The house has also seen us survive so much tragedy, so there are all those echoes inside.”

Brent and Berkus, 52, will celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary in May, and the couple is stronger than ever as they prepare to mark the milestone.

“I don’t know what works for everyone else, but I know what works for us is that we’re each other’s biggest cheerleaders. We’re in the same industry, and that can be very complicated for a lot of people,” says Brent. “But we’ve always supported each other else. We also stay away from each other. And we really love each other.”

IN The space that holds you Brent also gives fans a look at their peaceful home on a farm in Portugal, where they’ve put down roots for the past few years.

“The interaction with that farm is all about caring. We have 30 sheep, four peacocks. We’re not interesting people there, and the sense of purpose is really nice,” says Brent. “I gave my mother a home on the property and she lives there now. We spend the summer outside and our kids love it. They don’t wear shoes for 30 days!”

“I’m open to anything. I love those guys. I’m friends with them and I have a lot of respect for what the show does and what it stands for,” says Brent. “That’s what’s most important to me about design, so you never know. I’m open to whatever life presents.”
