Jeremy Renner Says Filming His Silk Super Bowl Ad with Daughter Ava Was a ‘Beacon of Hope’ After Accident (Exclusive)

Jeremy Renner is feeling good — and he’s got the moves to prove it!

The Oscar-nominated star caught up with PEOPLE on the set of her upcoming Silk Super Bowl commercial, dancing, jumping and kicking her way through a very important task: making breakfast for her 10-year-old daughter, Ava.

“It’s her first job ever! [We] put her to work early,” Renner jokes of his real-life daughter.

While filming the video for “Feel Planty Good” in a rented house in Los Angeles on a sunny Saturday, Renner, dressed in a cozy bathrobe, went to work in the kitchen, singing James Brown’s 1965 hit “I Got You (I Feel Good) ” while preparing a championship breakfast for Ava.

For Renner, 53, the chance to partner with Silk on a high-profile spot (the company’s first Super Bowl ad) was a no-brainer because he’s a fan of the plant-based milk brand and used it to make a protein shake while recovering from a 2023 snowmobile accident.

“[Silk is] all about wellness, and I got pretty into it because it was forced on me as part of the lifestyle, which is great,” he says. “Now I have become so healthy.”

The falcon’s eye star has made incredible strides since January 1, 2023, when he was crushed by a giant plow while helping a family member near his home in Nevada. The actor spent more than two weeks in the hospital after breaking more than 30 bones and underwent multiple surgeries.

A year later, he’s back in action, and Renner — who released an album inspired by his recovery earlier this month — says the chance to perform stunts in a commercial is just the latest milestone on his road to recovery.

“I still don’t believe that it happened at all. There are certain types of milestones that give me confidence, and this is probably another one of them,” he says. “I would never try or attempt any of these moves, or dance around like James Brown on the counter. I did everything, it was fine and I wasn’t in too much pain the next day. I’m happy to be tested to try it out, but to be honest, there’s a lot of hesitation and it’s baby steps for me in this business.”

Still, the opportunity to make a public statement about physical prowess was one he particularly relished with Ava, who he shares with ex-wife Sonni Pacheco by his side.

“It’s a beacon of hope for me and my daughter, and this is a new part of our journey together in recovery and in life,” he says. “Getting back into life in a different way, getting out of the hospital bed, getting out of the house, being social, just doing normal things. It means a lot to me and I’m very grateful to be here to do this.”

With his Super Bowl commercial now shot and ready to go, Renner can focus on real The Super Bowl, which he hopes will feature his beloved San Francisco 49ers. (The team will face the Detroit Lions on Sunday to determine who will advance to the final showdown on February 11.)

“I am delighted about it. It’s a very good opportunity for us and we have a great team and we’re healthy,” he says of his team’s chances of winning. “It’s pretty cool. I don’t have a plan B. There is no such thing as a plan B. That means you are planning to fail. It’s the same thing in my career — I never planned to do anything else. There is no such thing as failure, and so is recovery. It’s like I planned to die. I feel better, you know what I mean? That’s just some attitude I have. So with the Niners, they won’t lose. You don’t have to plan it.”
