O’Connell and Romijn welcomed their twin daughters together, Charlie and Dolly, on December 28, 2008. “Mother, father and both girls are all home and doing well,” Romijn’s rep confirmed to PEOPLE at the time of their arrival.
A month before the birth of her twins, the actress told PEOPLE that she was taking “quite a bit of time off” from work. “I really want this to be my job for at least the next six months,” she said in November 2008. “Jerry and I want to be very hands-on. My mom comes to help us as much as we need. But this is something we’re really looking forward to.”
She added: “I’m really excited to see what happens next and to visit a completely different chapter in my life.”

Despite having two famous parents, Charlie and Dolly act like normal teenagers. In December 2020, O’Connell joked with PEOPLE about how he was dealing with his daughters’ pre-teen years.
“Normally, this is the time — I know, because I kind of experience it — when they want me to drop them off at school two blocks away so their friends don’t see me,” O’Connell said at the time.
They want to be dropped off at the mall and hang out there for four hours, but they don’t want their friends to see me when I pick them up, he added. (BTW, now they go to the cinema together and take pictures together!)
For a father of two, being the father of a girl was an experience like no other. “It’s interesting being a father to girls. I’ve never had sisters so it’s a bit different,” O’Connell said.

“I can’t do it since they found out Paul Wesley was a part of it,” Romijn admitted to PEOPLE in September 2022. “My girls are 13, and they’re like, ‘Did you say Paul Wesley? Oh, we’re going. We’re going. 100%,’ she continued.
The actress added that she has since “indoctrinated many 11-year-old girls” to fans. “All these 11-year-olds come out of the box saying, ‘Is Paul Wesley part of your team now?'”
“I’m like, ‘Maybe. Maybe not,'” she added, saying, “It brings them all out in droves.”
