Jessica Lange's 3 Children: All About Shura, Hannah and Walker

Acclaimed actress Jessica Lange encouraged her children – Shura, Hannah and Walker – to pursue art.

The Cape Fear the star had her first daughter, Shura, in 1981 with Latvian dancer and actor Mikhail Baryshnikov, whom she dated for six years, from 1976 to 1982. She later had two children with playwright Sam Shepard, with whom she was in a relationship for nearly 30 years. Hannah was born in 1986 and Walker arrived a year later.

Lange talked about how much she loves being a mother AARP 2017 that “having children gives you a perspective you didn’t have before.”

“You are no longer the center of the universe. He opened my heart, made me a different person. Every move you make is with someone else in mind,” she said.

Lange and Mikhail welcomed Alexandra Lange Baryshnikov, whose name is Shura, on March 5, 1981.

Shura attended Marlboro College in Vermont, where she majored in American Studies, Theater and Contemporary Dance. When she was younger, she trained in classical ballet, and as she grew up, she continued to follow in her mother’s and father’s footsteps.

Lange’s older daughter is head of the movement department at Brown University/Trinity Repertory Company’s MFA program in acting and dance and has a long resume.

She has been teaching at an Ivy League school since 2011 and has danced with several large groups. Shura has also served as motion designer for performances such as The Handmaid’s Tale at the Boston Lyric Opera.

The mother of three spoke about Shura’s personality in 1991 Vanity Fair interview. “Shura has a great sense of self,” the Tootsie said the actress. “For a triple Pisces, she’s very grounded…she has an innate understanding that her father and I went our separate ways.”

Despite having a successful mom and dad, Shura said South coast today 2018 that she never felt compelled to do art.

“I spent a lot of time trying to avoid it [a career in the arts] and then she ended up being pulled back into the performing arts,” she said. “My parents took a hands-off approach; there was no pressure to follow in their footsteps.”

Shura called Lange and Mikhail “extremely inspirational individuals,” saying that while she sees them as “just her parents,” she also acknowledges how talented they are.

“The way we lived was inspiring; we were always surrounded by creative people,” she said. “It’s part of the fabric of who I am, whether I’m aware of it or not.”

The dancer made Lange a grandmother with the birth of two daughters, Ada and Ilsa Bryan. Lange is close to her two granddaughters, and according to her interview with AARPshe wrote a children’s book dedicated to them. It started as a Christmas present for Ada and Isla, and then a caring grandmother decided to publish it.

In June 2022, Shura posted a photo of herself and her partner Nick on her Instagram, announcing that they were engaged.

“This beautiful man asked me to marry him and I said yes,” she wrote. “The beauty of our life together really amazes me. Nicky, my best friend, it’s you and me baby. Big, big love.”

Hannah Jane Shepard, 39

Lange welcomed Hannah Jane Shepard with her then-partner Sam on January 13, 1986.

In the profile from 1991 with vanity fair, Lange spoke briefly about Hannah, then 5, calling her a “powerful person.”

According to her biography for Women in Media, Hannah attended Sarah Lawrence College, where she studied writing. She holds master’s degrees from the National University of Ireland and Fordham University and has always shown an interest in history, art and social justice.

Hannah has worked as a researcher, educator, and script reader for the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts and Public Theater, among others. She also participated as an archival producer on three documentaries.

Samuel Walker Shepard, 37

Lange’s youngest child, Samuel Walker Shepard, was born on June 14, 1987. He prefers the name Walker to Samuel.

Like his siblings, he ventured into the entertainment industry. Walker has always been interested in music, and after graduating from college he formed a band called The Dust Busters.

The group eventually changed their name to The Down Hill Strugglers. Walker sings and plays violin, banjo, guitar and harmonica for a band based in Brooklyn, New York.

According to the band’s website, their music “reflects and expands on the strong feel and variety of sounds found on old commercial and field recordings from the early 1920s and 1930s,” and they “convey the sounds of old, rural America. ”
