Jessie Mei Li was born on 27 August 1995 (26 years old in 2020) in Brighton, East Sussex, and grew up in Redhill, Surrey. Her star sign is Virgo. She attended Reigate College in Surrey, and after graduating from university, she joined the National Youth Theatre in London in 2015. After a year of training in the theatre, she joined the Identity Acting Academy 2016-2017 class.

Jessie May Lee made her screen debut in 2018 with the short film Together, They Smoke. Jessie made her stage debut in 2019 with All About Eve, a re-telling of the 1950s drama of the same name. She played the role of Claudia Casswell in the play, which was staged at the Noel Coward Theatre in London. She starred opposite Lily James and Gillian Anderson.

In 2019, Jesse appeared in an episode of Locked Up Abroad and the short film Travelooper. Jesse Lee returns to the screen with the 2021 Netflix series Shadow and Bone, in which she plays the protagonist Aline Starkov.
