On Wednesday, Today the show’s correspondent shared a series of Instagram stories documenting her day as she went wig shopping. Martin, 47, was diagnosed with breast cancer in July, just a week after testing positive for the BRCA gene. She lost her hair during chemotherapy.
Martin began his Stories by revealing that she only had four chemotherapy treatments left. She explained that she treated herself to an “ambush makeover”, which included doing her eyelashes and finding a wig.
The lifestyle contributor began with positive energy, telling her followers that she was aware that her eyelashes and eyebrows would lose hair just weeks after the treatment.
“I will be dressed like me,” Martina told her followers at the time. “I’m excited. I feel like I want to feel like myself.”

After sharing her excitement, Martina’s next story included a teary-eyed video of herself wearing a blonde wig that resembled her pre-treatment hair.
“That’s how my friend Andrew helped me,” explained an emotional Martin. “This looks like me, doesn’t it?”
“It’s hard,” Martin said between tears. “I feel like I could shape it myself. It’s fun. It’s like playing dress up. I dress as myself.”

Martin then shared a clip of the wigs lined up together. In the background, she said the whole process was “really hard and weird” and reiterated how she described the experience as a time to “play dress-up”.
She then went on to say how it was difficult to get the lashes done because there isn’t “a lot to attach [fake eyelashes] to.”
She then thanked her followers for their support and said she was feeling “better”. Martin added that her friend Andrew told her that he thinks of the wig as an “accessory”.

Martin has been undergoing treatment since August, which includes chemotherapy as well as preventive bilateral mastectomy.
She told PEOPLE in October that she also caught a cold at the same time she was getting chemo. Cold-capping is a procedure where hair follicles are frozen in sub-zero temperatures during chemotherapy to prevent them from absorbing chemicals.
