Career
At the age of 15, Joan decided to start a band. In the same year, she founded her own band, ‘The Runaways’, with several friends. In the 1970s, disco music began to shake things up. Because most people saw ‘The Runaways’ as teenage amateurs screaming about sex, drugs and rebellion, they were initially unpopular. She is also a member of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and claims to have been a vegetarian for over 30 years.
The band’s next album, ‘Queens of Noise’, was released in 1977. This album also failed in the United States. The band received three “gold” records in Japan. Joan and her band were showered with love for Japan, which they reciprocated on their album “Live in Japan”, which was partly dedicated to their Japanese fans. The album, ironically, was the band’s first major hit in the United States. Joan moved to England in the late 1970s, depressed by the failure of their American recordings, and considered a solo career.
