Joe Alwyn and Taylor Swift’s private romance was intentional, the actor believes.
33-year-old Kindness star told Sunday Times style in a new interview that he and the “Fortnight” singer, 34, agreed to keep the “details” of their romance “private” while they were together.
“As everyone knows, we have decided together – both of us, mutually – to keep the more private details of our relationship private,” Alwyn said. “It’s never been something to be commoditized and I see no reason to change that now.”
“And, look, this was also just over a year ago and I feel fortunate to be in a really great place in my life, professionally and personally. I feel very good,” he added.

When asked by the magazine if he had heard Swift’s latest album, Department for tortured poets — which fans believe may have been composed of material inspired by the former couple’s breakup — Alwyn said: “Thinking about what I was going to say, I would think and hope that anyone and everyone can empathize. … This is not a direct answer to your question, but just a reflection on what I want to talk about.”
The Catherine aka Birdy the actor also didn’t talk about whether he’s still in touch with Swift or seeing someone new, citing his previous high-profile relationship with the Grammy winner.
“I’m sure you know, given the level of noise and scrutiny of my past relationship, why I wouldn’t want to just open the door to that kind of thing right now,” Alwyn told times.

A source previously told PEOPLE after the couple split that Alwyn was “going out and happy.” The insider also noted that the actor has “moved on” with Swift and is “definitely not talking bad about her,” adding, “He was in love with her, but it just didn’t work out.”
Alwyn and Swift’s divorce after six years of dating was largely due to “differences in their personalities,” a source close to the former couple told PEOPLE at the time.

The couple was first linked in May 2017. Their first public appearance together happened a year later in 2018. In an August 2019 interview, the “Anti-Hero” singer said Guard from Alwyn: “Our relationship is not up for debate.”
Still, Swift has provided some insight into public relationships over the years, including her own Midnight the album she released before breaking up with Alwyn.
She previously described her song “Lavender Haze” as a reference to the challenges they faced while together.
“My relationship has been going on for six years, we’ve had to avoid weird rumors, tabloid stuff, and we just ignore it,” she said in a now-deleted Instagram video about the song.
Since the breakup, Swift has been dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
