U.S. Soldier Hopes to Relocate 3-Legged Dog from the Middle East: Leaving Him 'Would Go Against My Moral Code'

A soldier wants to help a three-legged dog find his furry home with her in the United States.

US Army Specialist Cedwin was deployed in the Middle East when she noticed the dog struggling, Paws of War said in a press release obtained by PEOPLE.

The dog, a German shepherd named Koda, was found to be missing a leg and living in temperatures over 100 degrees without water, according to the nonprofit, which “helps members of the military and their pets, rescues and trains dogs to be service dogs and provides homes pets for veterans and emergency services.”

Cedwin spent time with the dog and helped him get well. After developing a bond with Koda, she appealed to her fellow soldiers and the authorities to transfer him to America. But according to Paws of War, “she was told it was too big a mission.”

Now the organization has stepped in to help Cedwin bring the dog to the US by raising funds to cover the costs of Koda’s transportation and medical care, which includes fitting the dog with prosthetics.

“Leaving Koda would go against my moral code. There’s no way I’m going to leave him to die,” Cedwin said in a statement. “I’m determined to bring him home and ensure his safety and well-being,” she continued. “I named him Koda because it means friend in Arabic. It perfectly suits his gentle nature and steadfast spirit.”

In his own statement, Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War, said: “We rescued Koda, but there is no way that dog can survive alone in this harsh climate and conditions.” He added, “Koda deserves to come to America and live a safe and happy life with Spc. Cedwin.”
