Joe Biden's 7 Grandchildren: Everything to Know

Joe Biden may be the President of the United States, but to his grandchildren, he’s just “Pop.”

Biden has seven grandchildren from his four children. The president’s son Hunter Biden has daughters Naomi (30), Finnegan (23) and Maisy (22) with ex-wife Kathleen Buhle, daughter Navy Roberts (6) with Arkansas woman Lunden Roberts and son Beau Jr. (4) with his current wife, Melissa Cohen. Biden’s eldest son, the late Beau Biden, had a daughter Natalie (20) and a son Robert “Hunter” (17) with his wife Hallie.

It’s no secret that Biden and his grandchildren are close. “They’re crazy about me and I’m crazy about them,” the president said in one episode SmartLess podcast in 2022. “I contact each of my grandchildren every day.”

Biden’s grandchildren were there for his big political moments. They watched him become the 46th president and supported his decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential race.

“Today I’m just proud of my dad, our president, Joe Biden, who served our country with every ounce of his soul,” Naomi wrote on X (formerly Twitter) after the news in July 2024. “Not only was he — and he will continue to be—the most effective president in our lifetime, but he has probably already established himself as the most successful and influential public servant in our nation’s history.”

Here’s everything you need to know about President Biden’s seven grandchildren.

Naomi Biden is the eldest daughter of Hunter and his ex-wife Buhla and the first granddaughter of President Biden. She was born in December 1993 and shares the name of Biden’s late daughter Naomi, who died in a car accident at the age of 13 months along with his first wife Neilia in 1972.

A graduate of Columbia Law School, Naomi met her husband Peter Neal in 2018 through a mutual friend, and the couple got engaged in 2021. According to two sources, Naomi and Neal currently live on the third floor of the White House residence — one floor up from the main living quarters of the First family — and the same place Michelle Obama’s mother, Marian Robinson, called home during her son-in-law’s eight-year reign.

Naomi and Neal were married on the South Lawn of the White House on November 19, 2022 — the first wedding held on the property in nine years. The bride wore a custom Ralph Lauren dress for the ceremony, an obvious nod to her grandfather. President Biden wore the American flag at his 2021 inauguration ceremony.

President Biden and his oldest granddaughter have a pretty close relationship, and Naomi occasionally gives glimpses of their relationship on Instagram. In February 2021, she shared a video of the two of them racing in the game Mario Kart while he was at Camp David.

“Secret Service made an exception and let him drive alone,” she wrote above a photo of her and Biden playing an arcade-style game, adding, “A little rusty but still won (barely).”

In June 2024, Naomi testified during Hunter’s federal gun trial. She talked about her dad’s struggle with addiction and the time she visited him in rehab.

Finnegan Biden, 23

President Biden’s second grandson, Finnegan Biden, was born in 2000 to Hunter and his then-wife Buhla. She was named after her great-grandmother – Biden’s mother – Catherine Eugenia Finnegan.

She studied history, with a focus on American studies, at the University of Pennsylvania. As a student, Finnegan led a successful campaign to extend the university’s pass/fail deadline to 2020. As reported by UPenn’s student publication 34th Street Magazine, Finnegan started a Change.org petition to adjust the deadline. “I’ve been thinking about ways to implement change and talk about it productively [so] the school could respond, and [the petition] seemed the most productive [way] to show the school that the students really care about this,” she told the publication.

Finnegan graduated in 2021, and her older sister Naomi celebrated the exciting achievement on Instagram. “Drinking with pride and eternally in awe of my first love and little sister @finneganbiden ilysmsmsm,” Naomi wrote alongside a photo of Finnegan in prom attire.

In May 2023, Finnegan joined Jill at the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla at Westminster Abbey. The first lady wore a blue two-piece Ralph Lauren ensemble, while Finnegan was seen in a yellow Markarian dress. Their ensembles were a subtle sign of support for Ukraine, as the national flag features blue and yellow.

Hunter and Buhle’s youngest daughter, Maisy Biden, was born in 2001. She is the third granddaughter of President Biden.

During her grandfather’s tenure as Vice President from 2009 to 2017, Maisy grew up in Washington DC and attended Sidwell Friends School with Barack Obama’s younger daughter, Sasha. Maisy and Sasha became “best friends,” according to Obama, and even played on the same fourth-grade basketball team, the Vipers, that the then-president coached.

According to Obama, Maisy was the star of the team. “Maisy was like the LeBron of the league,” he said on Dax Shepard Armchair expert podcast in 2021. “She dominated. She was great, you know, and we went undefeated. The Vipers ruled.”

In addition to basketball, Maisy also played lacrosse and soccer in high school.

Ahead of the 2020 presidential election, the aspiring artist joined her grandfather in the campaign. In June 2022, she traveled to Spain with President Biden and the First Lady. While there, Maisy met Queen Letizia, visited a Ukrainian refugee center and attended a dinner for NATO leaders with her grandfather.

In May 2023, Maisy graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. The president and first lady joined Maisy’s parents and sisters for her ceremony.

President Biden’s fourth granddaughter, Natalie Biden, was born on August 4, 2004. She was the first child of Biden’s late son, Beau Biden, and his wife, Hallie. Her father died after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer when she was just 10 years old.

In January 2021, Natalie joined her older cousins and Aunt Ashley for an interview with Todayis Jenna Bush Hager. During the debate, Biden’s daughter and grandchildren shared some of their fondest memories with the current president.

“I think our favorite holiday is Thanksgiving,” Natalie told Bush Hager. “Because we usually go to Nantucket…Maisy and I and my grandfather and my uncle and my dad…we used to go Polar Bear in Nantucket in November.”

Cousin Maisy added: “That would always be crazy because they’d have to bring all the Secret Service divers and swimmers for my dad. And it’s like me, Natalie and him holding hands, running into the water.”

Natalie also voted for the first time in October 2022 — and joined her grandfather to vote early in Wilmington, Delaware.

Beau and Hallie’s younger son, Robert “Hunter” Biden II was born in 2006. He is President Biden’s fifth grandchild and first grandchild.

Before Biden launched his 2019 presidential bid, his grandchildren told him the decision was a good one. According to Naomi, it was even her younger cousin Hunter who showed Biden a tabloid story about the family to reassure his grandfather that they could handle the inevitable scrutiny. “I think little Hunter actually showed him that [a tabloid story on his phone] but then he basically told him, ‘We know it’s going to be bad,'” Naomi said. “But we have each other and we know the truth. And we’ll be fine.’ Well, I think he came out of that meeting a little more comforted.”

In April 2021, the Biden family gathered for Hunter’s confirmation in St. Joseph on the Brandywine, a Catholic church where the president and first lady regularly attend mass. Biden has been vocal about the importance of faith in his life, telling PEOPLE, “My Faith is a safe place for me, because I can be alone with my family, but somehow I absorb the fundamental principle that everyone should be treated with dignity.”

In August 2018, Hunter welcomed a daughter, Navy Joan Roberts, with a woman from Arkansas named Lunden Roberts. The following year, Lunden sued Hunter for paternity and child support, though he publicly denied the claims at the time. DNA testing later confirmed that Hunter was the father.

The legal dispute between Lunden and Hunter wound its way through Arkansas courts for more than four years and led to a settlement in June 2023, the terms of which were not publicly disclosed.

While the legal action made headlines, Republicans criticized President Biden for previously praising his “six grandchildren,” arguing that he does not recognize the Navy.

In a July 2023 statement exclusively to PEOPLE, President Biden dismissed the criticism, saying, “Our son Hunter and Navy’s mother, Lunden, are working together to foster a relationship that is in their daughter’s best interest, protecting her privacy as much as possible going forward. This is not a political issue, it is a family matter. Jill and I want only what is best for all of our grandchildren, including Navy.”

A source familiar with the situation told PEOPLE that the recently settled child support dispute between Hunter and Lunden has dictated how the relationship has played out so far.

“You have to remember that up until just a few weeks ago, there was some pretty contentious legal action going on between Navy’s parents. As grandparents, the Bidens are following Hunter’s lead,” the source said, adding, “They are — and have been giving — Hunter and Lunden space and time to figure things out.”

The source further said that the situation is a family issue.

“Thousands of families have faced similar circumstances, dealing with it in private, against the spotlight,” a source told PEOPLE. “At the center is a 4-year-old girl and everyone wants what’s best for her, including all her grandparents.”

In 2019, Hunter secretly married South African Melissa Cohen. After news of the wedding broke, Biden confirmed Hunter’s marriage to CBS News’ Adam Brewster.

In March 2020, the couple welcomed a son, Beau Biden Jr. — the seventh grandson of President Biden. Hunter and Cohen named it after Hunter’s late brother.

The little one’s name was confirmed ahead of Biden’s inauguration in 2021. Biden officials told reporters that “Beau Biden” joined the then-president-elect and family on the trip from Delaware to Washington, DC for the inauguration.

Beau Jr. attended the ceremony in his father’s arms.
