Joey King and Logan Lerman give fans a look at their new Hulu drama We were the lucky ones.
During a panel at the Hulu Winter Television Critics Association gathering in Pasadena, the two actors were joined by host Erica Lipez, director Thomas Kail and writer Georgia Hunter as they discussed the series, which follows a Jewish family separated at the start of World War II.
“So many people were affected by World War II, of course. And there are so many interesting stories among all those people, and [this] family was one of those forcibly displaced families that we decided to tell the story of,” King, 24, said of the Holocaust drama on Friday.
Noting that each perspective from this period in history was “worth telling,” King explained that their series in particular was also “hopeful” and “optimistic.”
“It deals with a lot of pain and suffering and sadness, but there’s a lot of hope in this series,” she said. “And hopefully people will feel that, too.”

We were the lucky ones follows Hunter’s The New York Times the bestseller of the same name that was published in 2017 and follows the Kurc family living in Radom, Poland.
King, who called the Hulu adaptation “a beautiful show,” added that it’s important to share “the grief that’s been experienced throughout history to create empathetic people.”
“It’s exciting to watch. You love those people. So it’s really nice to be a part of something that’s not just educational, of course,” she said. “But you really love this family when you’re watching. You want to know what’s going to happen to them. And it’s all true, which is amazing.”

As for Lerman, the 32-year-old Percy Jackson The alum reiterated that “it’s important to tell these stories for every generation.”
“This is what happens when hate goes unchecked,” he said. “You can apply it to the present times, the future, you can learn from the past and this part of history, this time period.”
Lerman added that he was personally drawn to the story and ultimately felt it was important to share it, because he didn’t see a certain “angle” that We were the lucky ones focused on. He also revealed that he thinks the “emphasis on refugees” should be an important move of the project.
“I haven’t seen the stories within this project, the character journeys, I haven’t seen that angle explored before,” he said. “It’s not just exploring something that’s already been done. This is new and interesting and I think we’re going to enlighten people about another aspect of World War II that they might not have been familiar with.”
