H also played Admiral Percy Fitzwallace in the first five seasons of the hit US political series The West Wing.

Amos played James Evans Sr. on Good Times, which featured one of television’s first two-parent black families.

That show was the closest to a real-life representation of an African-American family living in circumstances as they might be, Amos told Time magazine in 2021.

Amos left the series after disagreements over the portrayal of African-Americans in later seasons.

He was then cast as the grown-up Kunta Kinte, the centerpiece of Roots, based on Alex Haleys’ novel set during and after the era of slavery in the US.

The miniseries was a hit with critics and viewers, and Amos earned one of 37 Emmy nominations.

He told Time: “I knew it was a life-changing role for me, as an actor and just from a humanitarian standpoint.

“It was the culmination of all the misconceptions and stereotypical roles I had lived through and seen offered to me.

“It was like a reward for suffering those humiliations.”
