John Cena on Being Dua Lipa’s ‘Emotional Support’ on Argylle: ‘She Was Vulnerable Enough to Admit She Was Nervous’ (Exclusive)

Dua Lipa has a forever friend in John Cena!

After the singer told Rolling stone that she considers him her “emotional support actor,” Cena revealed to PEOPLE how the two bonded during filming Argyll at the film’s world premiere at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square on Wednesday.

“From that comment, I concluded, for which I am very grateful, that we had already recorded this Barbie, so this was her first chance to be on screen. She was vulnerable enough to admit that she was nervous,” she tells PEOPLE.

“Meanwhile, I’m standing in front of Dua Lipa, Matthew Vaughn, and Henry Cavill, and I’m like, ‘You’re not alone! I’m nervous too.’ So we started sharing it,” Cena continues. “We both tour with live acts, so we talked about that and life on the road, and it kind of came out of that.”

The Peacemaker the actor tells PEOPLE that he enjoyed “those moments” with the British singer-songwriter and that he is “glad for her too.”

IN Barbie, the singer played a mermaid-inspired Barbie doll, and Cena played a merman. As for his interest in appearing in the film, he said he was “thrilled with the concept” during a behind-the-scenes featurette shared by Warner Bros. in July.

“I think it’s going to be a movie that all audiences will enjoy. I think it’s going to be a movie that’s going to spark conversation. And I think it’s going to be beautifully visually appealing,” he said. “And the ideas behind it, I think audiences will walk away with, like, mixed feelings, which I think is the best form of entertainment.”

After director Greta Gerwig and lead actress Margot Robbie failed to receive Oscar nominations in the best director and best actress categories, he called their work “a damn fine achievement.”

“I try to operate under the construct of ‘What can I control?’ And I can’t change anything that happened,” he told PEOPLE on the red carpet.

“I can let my friend Margot and Greta know that awards are not the only measure of success and that they made a movie that did a tremendous job and changed a lot of lives in the process. And I think that’s a heck of a success,” he continued.

Barbie earned eight Oscar nominations this year, including best picture and best adapted screenplay, for Gerwig’s work with her husband, Noah Baumbach. Robbie was nominated for Best Picture as one of the film’s producers.
