Life throws its curve balls, but John Legend says he has the perfect person in his corner to deal with them.
The star, 45, who just released his new family album My favorite dreamopens up to PEOPLE in this week’s issue about his 6-year-old son Miles’ recent diagnosis of type 1 diabetes and how he and wife Chrissy Teigen, 38, are coming together through the ordeal.
It all started at summer camp, where “literally 80% of the kids got the same stomach upset within a day or two,” Legend explains of when Miles first felt sick. “I remember he was in the ER for that and they checked his blood sugar. They thought maybe this was a reaction to an infection or that he was diabetic. They did some more tests and decided it was the latter, he was type 1 diabetic. ”

The news was a shock for the whole family. “Chrissy was a little upset when she first heard it,” he says of his wife’s natural reaction to the diagnosis. Teigen confirmed the diagnosis shortly after posting a photo of Miles wearing an insulin monitor during the family’s recent visit to Paris for the Olympics. Legend says, “She was so good at learning what to do.”

For his part, “my personality is that I’m very optimistic and I’m very practical. As soon as I found out he had it, I knew it was going to be life-changing for him and for us, but I” Also like, ‘We can do it. ‘ We have great advice and lots of people to support us in our studies.”

As for Miles now, “he’s in the early stages of being diagnosed, and when you’re premature, your insulin is still doing some of the work it needs to do,” Legend explains. “But as the disease progresses, it’s going to get to a point where we’re really going to have to monitor everything, count carbs, give him insulin before that. We just have to be more aware.”

Dealing with the many ups and downs of parenthood, such as when the couple experienced a painful pregnancy loss in 2020, only strengthened the bond between Legend and Teigen. “Parenting makes us feel like we have a project together,” she says of raising Miles, along with her sisters Luna, 8, Esti, 19 months, and brother Wren, 14 months. “Creating the life we want for them, coordinating with each other, we really feel like a team.”
