John Schneider Was Ready to Give Up 'Everything' Before Meeting New Girlfriend 1 Year After Wife Alicia's Death

John Schneider is in a new relationship a year after the death of his wife Alicia Allain

During the performance at Grace Begins, Podcast May 29, The Dukes of Hazzard star told hosts Cathy Cardenas and Catherine Sutherland that he found new love after losing his late wife to cancer.

Reflecting on a “really tough year” that “pretty much pulled me out of everything,” Schneider, 64, said his faith helped him through a dark period in his life.

“God sent a widower to a widow and a widow to a widower who [gets] that, who understands. Because let me tell you something, I was ready to give it up, everything – everything,” he explained, before gesturing towards his new partner off camera. “Then when I thought the very thought of a date or holding another hand was repulsive, I met this, that crazy lady over there.”

Schneider called his new relationship a “miracle” and noted that he “can honestly say I didn’t want her” before she entered his life.

“I’m done,” he continued with emotion pouring out of his voice. – If that hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t be here, there’s no way in the world.

After Allain was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2019, she and Schneider decided to marry “in the eyes of God” in July, as Schneider’s divorce from ex-wife Elvira “Elly” Castle had not yet been finalized. (The couple legally married a few months later, on September 27, 2019.)

Although her cancer went into remission by 2020, Allain broke her back in a racing car accident in December 2021, and further tests revealed that her cancer had returned and metastasized to her bones. Two years later, in February 2023, Allain succumbed to her illness and died in their shared home.

Speaking to PEOPLE in August 2023, Schneider said he misses “every damn thing” about Alicia “every day.”

“I’ve got to get to the point where I’m going to look around and see where it is, not where it’s not,” he said. “And I’m trying to do that, but it’s hard. I kind of love her more every minute, but also, I kind of miss her more and more every minute.”

He continued, “And that’s the personality of grief, to live like this, to be pulled in two completely opposite directions at the same time … you want something with all your heart and soul, and you don’t want it with all your heart and soul, at the same time I want it to go away, but I don’t want to diminish it in any way, and when I do, I want to laugh at it, but I don’t.”

News of Schneider’s relationship comes roughly five months after he came under fire for his controversial remarks about President Joe Biden in December 2023. In a since-deleted response posted on X, the actor argued that the president should be “publicly hanged,” per deadline, prompting the Secret Service to open an investigation into his statements.

The statement was written in response to a twitter in which Biden, 81, expressed that former President Donald Trump “poses many threats to our country.”
