And if he goes through, the former England captain will join the exodus of Premier League legends moving to the Middle Eastern country.

Terry, 42, was approached by Al-Shabab bosses about a month ago and offered a contract of at least two years and up to four years if signed as expected.

He is currently working on a one-year contract as a consultant at the Chelsea Academy.

Chelsea have already said they will not stand in his way as a mark of respect for his service over almost two decades – although it will be a huge blow to their youth team to lose such a figure from their camp.

Al-Shabab are not considered one of the main players in the Saudi league, but they have big ambitions.

Bosses there believe Terry has the coaching skills and reputation to attract more stars to his club to build it up.

He is the most successful player in Chelsea’s history with five Premier League titles, the Champions League and five FA Cups among his trophies and played 717 games for them.

After retirement, he decided to move into coaching and management, but so far he has not been able to get a senior job.

He recently worked under Dean Smith at Leicester and Aston Villa but is desperate to be a manager himself.

Terry’s former England teammate Steven Gerrard is in Saudi Arabia working as Al-Ettifaq boss. Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler is also there to run Al-Qadsiah.

A number of top players also signed up for the Saudi League over the summer with three Chelsea players in N’Golo Kante, Edouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly moving to the Middle East.
