Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jose Alvarado has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with left elbow inflammation. The 28-year-old pitcher has been a valuable asset to the team this season, boasting an impressive 1.38 ERA, 6 saves, 39 strikeouts and 9 shutouts in 26 appearances. His last outing was a one-inning scoreless performance against the Tampa Bay Rays before the move to IL, which is retroactive to Friday.
Although All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel took over the closing duties, Alvarado played a key role in high-pressure situations for the Phillies. In fact, the team achieved significant success, winning 20 of the 26 games in which Alvarado played.
This isn’t the first time Alvarado has dealt with this injury, as he was previously on IL from May 8th to June 8th with the same issue. Manager Rob Thomson acknowledged the concern, but mentioned that the current inflammation is similar to what Alvarado has experienced before, and the primary focus now is to allow his elbow to heal.
To fill Alvarado’s roster spot, the Phillies recalled right-handed pitcher Andrew Bellatti from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Bellatti, 31, has already made 15 appearances out of the Philadelphia bullpen this season, posting a 1-0 record with a 5.68 ERA.
He also had success in his games for Lehigh Valley, posting a 1-0 record, three saves and an impressive 1.20 ERA. The Phillies will look to Bellatti to contribute in Alvarado’s absence as they aim to maintain their good hitting streak and realize their postseason aspirations.
