Former Texas Rangers shortstop Josh Hamilton was one of Major League Baseball’s best players at one point in his career. In 1999, he was selected first overall by Tampa Bay. However, after struggling with injuries and drug use during his first few seasons, he finally made his major league debut in 2007. And, wow, what a comeback.
The outfielder was signed by the Cincinnati Reds as a free agent, but was traded to the Texas Rangers after his first season. In his rookie season, Hamilton hit .304 with 32 home runs, a league-leading 130 RBIs and nine stolen bases. This earned him his first All-Star selection as well as the Silver Slugger Award. By the time knee problems ended his career in 2017, the outfielder had made five All-Star appearances. Unfortunately, his career was hindered not only by injuries. Hamilton was dealing with internal issues that were destroying his relationship with his ex-wife and children.
Josh Hamilton and his wife split amid rumors of infidelity
Hamilton’s battles with heroin addiction, which began in 2001, received much publicity. Multiple failed drug tests and stints in rehab hurt his career. While looking for help, he met his mentor and businessman Michael Chadwick. Michael introduced him to his daughter, Katie Chadwick, the athlete’s future wife. The couple started dating in 2002 and married two years later. After 11 tumultuous years together, they filed for divorce in 2015. Katie told TMZ that her husband’s decision to file for divorce took her completely by surprise.
“It came out of nowhere. There was no major fight or explosion. Nothing moved him. I have always supported him and will continue to support him. “I support and adore him now and in the future,” added Hamilton’s ex-wife.
Years later, during an appearance on Marrying Millions, Hamilton said her marriage ended because of Hamilton’s substance abuse problems and personal struggles. She also said that she does not plan to divorce.
Josh Hamilton pleads guilty to assaulting daughter.
Hamilton has three girls with his ex-wife, and in 2019 he was arrested for child abuse after beating one of them. Hamilton, according to his daughter’s claims, threw a water bottle at her, hitting her in the chest, and then shouted and yelled at her. Then he picked her up, slung her over his shoulder, dragged her into the bedroom and put her face down on the bed.
The former Major League Baseball player hit her on the legs with both an open fist and a punch. After that, he allegedly grabbed her by her sweatpants, slammed her back onto the bed, and hit her back and legs with his open palm, causing numerous scratches on her back. Hamilton allegedly told the victim, “I hope you go ahead [expletive] judge and tell him what a terrible father I am, so I don’t have to see you anymore.” Hamilton’s lawyer issued a statement denying the charges, but Hamilton pleaded guilty to them in February 2022.
