Jude Anthany Joseph is an Indian director, actor, writer and software engineer working primarily in the Malayalam film industry. He is known for being the director of films such as Ohm Shanthi Oshaana (2014) and 2018: Everybody is a Hero (2023).

Jude Anthany Joseph started a relationship while studying at the London Business School (LBS) Engineering College in Kerala. However, the girl later left him. In an interview, Joseph revealed that after this relationship, he decided not to get married. However, he later fell in love with Diyana Ann James, whom he initially contacted through a Facebook comment. Their story began when Diyana left a comment on Joseph’s Facebook post related to the movie Ohm Shanthi Oshaana.

In 2014, he changed his name from Sijo Joseph to Jude Anthany Joseph due to his relationship with Jude. Jude Anthony Joseph initially began his career as an assistant director. He has worked as an assistant director on films such as Malarvaadi Arts Club (2010) and Thattathin Marayathu (2012). Jude made his directorial debut in 2014 with Ohm Shanthi Oshaana, co-written by Joseph and director-writer Midhun Manuel Thomas.

In 2016, Joseph worked as the director and screenwriter of a comedy road movie titled “Oru Muthassi Gadha”. He directed the film Sarah, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2021. Jude Anthony Joseph directed an epic survival drama in 2023 called 2018 (also known as 2018: Everybody’s a Hero). The film, which he co-wrote, went on to become the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time and one of the highest-grossing Indian films of 2023. On September 27, 2023, the film was announced as India’s official entry for the 2024 Oscars.

Insult the mayor
Joseph was arrested in April 2017 on a complaint filed by Mayor Soumini Jain. According to her, Joseph abused her after she refused permission to shoot a film at Subhas Bose Park in Kochi, Kerala. However, Joseph was later released on bail.
Kasaba Mysognyy OK
Joseph faced backlash for making misogynistic comments on social media during the ‘Kasaba Mysogyny Row’ event in December 2017; the controversy started with actress Parvathy Thiru at the Kerala International Film Festival in the same year Parvathy Thiruvothu used the movie “Kasaba” as an example to criticize the way women are represented in movies. In response to Parvathy’s remarks, Joseph expressed his views through a social media post, writing:
A monkey enters the circus tent. It performs acrobatics according to the words of the circus master. Eventually, the monkey became famous throughout the city as an acrobat. It then began insulting circus performers and owners, accusing them of exploiting it. The monkey may initially return to the forest. But if it did, who would hear about it? “
Anthony VS Anthony Varghese
In 2023, Anthony filed charges against actor Anthony Varghese, accusing him of quitting a project after receiving an advance. According to Anthony, Varghese had accepted an advance payment of Rs. 10 lakh, but quit the project ten days before the shoot was scheduled to begin. Anthony claimed in the interview that Varghese did not return the money and allegedly used it for his sister’s wedding. However, Varghese later responded to the accusations in an interview and said he had returned the money to the film’s producers and that he did not use the advance for his sister’s wedding. Varghese further mentioned that while he was initially determined to do the film, he became unsure after reading the script and later decided to quit. Varghese added that his mother even filed a complaint against Jude for making baseless accusations against him and his family.

However, he decided to make the requested short film, a choice that ultimately helped him overcome his depression. Later, Joseph conducted extensive research on the Kerala floods and their impact, culminating in the idea for the film 2018.
