Julianne Hough’s long-awaited return to music.
In an interview about his new book Everything we never knewwhich will be available on August 13, the 36-year-old dancer says the release of her fictional novel comes with a musical accompaniment.
“I’m putting out music for the first time in a really long time, and it’s because I felt like I just turned around during my country career, and I just went on to something else because even though I was doing great, I didn’t personally feel like I was enough successful,” Hough, who released a self-titled studio album in 2008, tells PEOPLE. “I’m coming back in this cycle of feeling like I have unfinished business, but I’m so glad I’m doing it now.”
The music — the title track “Everything We Never Knew” and four bonus tracks, “Air,” “Fire,” “Water” and “Earth” — helps tell the story of the book’s protagonist, Lexi, who realizes she can feel other people’s emotions and see their memories.
“I’m writing these songs that really mean something to this journey that I’ve been on, and each one of those songs is connected to one of the lessons that Lexi goes through in the book,” Hough explains.
“For ‘Air,’ she will learn to speak for herself for the first time,” he adds. “In ‘Fire,’ she really connects with her body, her sensuality, and her life energy. Learning to create more healthy anger versus bitter anger, grief and loss has to do with the ‘Water’ lesson he is going through. And then ‘Earth’ is all about the family system and the roots of forgiveness without forgetting…healing that family system after hurt, abandonment and betrayal.”

Hough, who says her new fiction novel is based on personal experiences — “I went through a time of great transformation in 2020, and I wanted to share everything, but I didn’t want to give it my all. So I thought, why not write a fictional novel?,” she tells PEOPLE — admitting that she feels “vulnerable” after releasing it to the world.
“This book is very important to me and my whole life, I’ve really been a performer where I’ve taken projects and brought them out, and with this book it really felt like it was coming from me as an artist, and I feel more vulnerable sharing this than with anything else I’ve ever shared,” the Dancing with the stars says the dancer-turned-presenter.

“We’re currently figuring out the date for the rest of the music because while I’ve been writing it, I’m continuing to write more. And I’m like, ‘Should we just make an album?’ So we’ll have those pieces of music for the book in August or September, but there’s probably more music to come.”
