Kacey Musgraves Says She’s Forever a ‘Long Hair Girlie’ After Trying Short Cuts (Exclusive)

Kacey Musgraves has finished her mane makeover.

The Grammy winner tells PEOPLE that she remains committed to long hair after experimenting with shorter hairstyles when she was younger.

‘I’m a long-haired girl — I’ve tried cutting it before, but it doesn’t look right,’ she says. ‘I’m not going to do it again. I look really silly with that little ponytail — like a founding father!”

As for the secret to Musgraves’ shiny, healthy locks, the singer-songwriter has a less-is-more approach.

“I just try not to follow him so much,” she says.

Musgraves’ romantic, loose hair is on full display in her music video for “Deeper Well,” the title track from her new album of the same name.

“It’s a video for witches, cottage girls, gentle girls, nature ladies,” she tells PEOPLE of the aesthetic behind the video. “I just love the cottage core moment.”

Much like her pared-down beauty, the singer’s lyrics are raw and real.

“Ultimately, the song sums up where I am in my mid-30s and really evaluating what love means to me, what friendships mean to me, what are the things that I need, what really works and doesn’t work for me,” she says. A deeper well. “It is [about] take into account and make room for the things that really matter.”

And while Musgraves enjoys getting back to nature, she’s also heavily inspired by the concrete jungle of New York, having recorded much of her album in the Big Apple.

“Girl, I’m always late at night checking Zillow, acting like a fool — that’s my favorite,” says the Nashville-based country star. “I wouldn’t rule it out, but I have a community in Nashville that I know I can’t find anywhere else.”

She adds, “I think New York City is a very special place and I feel really inspired to create there.”

Musgraves’ new music marks a transformation for the star, who says her focus remains on bringing out her truest self.

“This life is so short. I think you have to be a little bit ruthless about removing barriers to growth,” she says. “It could mean adjusting your expectations with family members. It could mean ending a friendship. It could be breaking up or giving up a habit that just doesn’t serve you well anymore. It’s enough to be alert to be willing to pay attention to what your flow nature is trying to tell you what you need.”
