Kader Khan was born on October 22, 1937 in Kabul, Afghanistan (age 81 in 2018). When Kader was one year old, his family moved to Mumbai because of their superstitious belief that the place they lived in was evil and brought misfortune to their lives. Unfortunately, moving to Mumbai did not bring him wealth but worsened his family situation. He attended a local municipal school but often missed classes because he had no shoes. He spends his days imitating people in a nearby cemetery. There was nothing to cherish about his childhood, and even his hopes were shattered when his parents divorced. His decision to move with his mother turned out to be the wrong one because his stepfather was abusive. Later, he graduated from Ismail Yusuf College, University of Mumbai and received his Master of Engineering (MIE) in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Engineers. In 1970, Khan joined MH Saboo Siddik Engineering College, Byculla as a mathematics teacher. In addition to teaching, he performed in college plays. As a theater artist, he earns Rs 350 per performance. When Kader performed at the academy’s annual event, actor Dilip Kumar noticed him and signed him up for his next film, Bairaag and Sagina Mahato.

Kader Khan belongs to the Pashtun Kakar tribe and believes in Islam. He was the son of Abdul Rahman Khan and Iqbal Begum. Kader had three brothers, Shams ul Rehman, Fazal Rehman and Habib ul Rehman. Qadr was a Hafiz-e-Quran (one who recited the Quran).
He is married to Hajira Khan. The couple has three sons.
His eldest son, Abdul Quddus Khan, settled in Canada and worked as an airport security guard. His son Sarfaraz Khan is an actor who has appeared in films like Tere Naam and Wanted. Kader’s younger son Shahnawaz Khan has worked as an assistant director in films such as “Humko Tumse Pyaar Hain”, “Vaada” and “Milenge Milenge”. He shared the screen space with his father in the comedy film Nawabi Sharabi.
Kader had a grandson Hamza Khan (son of Sarfaraz).

Kader made his debut in the Bollywood film Daag in 1973, in which he played a prosecutor. He is recognized for his supporting roles in films starring Amitabh Bachchan, Feroze Khan, Anil Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Jitendra and Govinda.
Kader has worked with comedians such as Shakti Kapoor and Johnny Lever. In 1974, he was paid $1021,000 for writing dialogues in the film “Roti”. He also starred in the comedy series “Hasna Mat” which aired on Star Plus.

Apart from acting, his writing career is also flourishing and he co-wrote the romantic comedy film Jawani Diwani. He received Rs 1,500 cr for the film. He has since written dialogues for several successful films including Coolie No. 1, Himmatwala, Kanoon Apna Apna, Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Khoon Bhari Maang, Karma Sultanat ”, “Sarfarosh” and “Dharam Veer.” He has written many memorable dialogues for Amitabh Bachchan in films like “Mr. Natwarlal, “Do Aur Do Paanch”, “Hum”, “Satte Pe Satta” and “Agneepath”. He also wrote the scripts for “Agneepath” and “Naseeb”, both of which were huge box-office successes.
