Muthuvel Karunanidhi Kanimozhi, also known as Kanimozhi or MK Kanimozhi, was born on January 5, 1968 (age 56; as of 2024) to politician M. Karunanidhi and his third wife, Rajathi Ammal. Her father was already married to Dayalu when her mother had an affair with her father M. Karunanidhi. The extra-military episode came into play when Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi, whose mother’s name had appeared in rally records, was asked who lived with him in the house on Oliver Road in Chennai Public domain and he is charging official rent for the house. She is the only child of her parents and has 4 half-brothers: MK Stalin, MK Alagiri, MK Muthu, MK Tamilarasu and a half-sister Selvi Geetha Kovilam.

Canimozhi had always been a bright student and loved to learn. She received her education from the Oratory Convent in Church Park, Chennai. In 1994, she received her Master’s degree in Economics from Ethiraj College for Women, University of Madras.

She started her career in journalism and has worked in various media outlets including Kungumam, The Hindu and Tamil Murasu.

In 2007, she entered politics by becoming a member of the Tamil Nadu federal assembly. In 2013, she was re-elected to the Tamil Nadu Federal Assembly. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, she defeated her nearest rival Tamilisai Soundararajan of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Thuthukudi constituency by a margin of 3.47 lakh votes.
