Muthuvel Karunanidhi Kanimozhi, also known as Kanimozhi or MK Kanimozhi, was born on January 5, 1968 (age 56; as of 2024) to politician M. Karunanidhi and his third wife, Rajathi Ammal. Her father was already married to Dayalu when her mother had an affair with her father M. Karunanidhi. The extra-military episode came into play when Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi, whose mother’s name had appeared in rally records, was asked who lived with him in the house on Oliver Road in Chennai Public domain and he is charging official rent for the house. Karunanidhi took the bold step of saying, “Mother of my daughter Kanimozhi,” as he could not officially call Rajati his wife at that time. Her father had always tried to maintain a balance between the two families as during his life he spent half of his life at his official residence in Gopalapuram and the rest at Rajathi in Chennai Spend time in residence at CIT Colony. Although she was born to be her father’s heir, she had some other ambitions as she wanted to do something related to art, poetry and literature.

Kanimozhi was born into the Isai Villar community, one of the most influential political families in Tamil Nadu. Her father M. Karunanidhi served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for five consecutive terms. Her mother, Rajathi Ammal, was a member of a theater troupe in the mid-1960s. She is the only child of her parents and has 4 half-brothers: MK Stalin, MK Alagiri, MK Muthu, MK Tamilarasu and a half-sister Selvi Geetha Kovilam.
She first married businessman Athiban Bose in 1989, but the marriage ended in divorce. In 1997, she married G. Aravindaan, a Tamil writer and IT professional living in Singapore. The couple has 2 sons.

Canimozhi had always been a bright student and loved to learn. She received her education from the Oratory Convent in Church Park, Chennai. In 1994, she received her Master’s degree in Economics from Ethiraj College for Women, University of Madras.
She started her career in journalism and has worked in various media outlets including Kungumam, The Hindu and Tamil Murasu.
In 2007, she entered politics by becoming a member of the Tamil Nadu federal assembly. In 2013, she was re-elected to the Tamil Nadu Federal Assembly. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, she defeated her nearest rival Tamilisai Soundararajan of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Thuthukudi constituency by a margin of 3.47 lakh votes.

On December 21, 2017, after a six-year trial, the CBI special court acquitted all the accused in the 2G scam, including her.
