She was born on September 21, 1980 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Her zodiac sign is Virgo. Her grandfather Raj Kapoor named her Siddhima and later changed her name to Kareena. At an early age, she developed an interest in acting. Her father was opposed to her becoming an actress, while her mother was fully supportive of her, which led to conflict between her parents and their eventual separation. Her mother subsequently raised her and her sister Karisma Kapoor. In 2007, her parents moved in with their daughters again. Due to her hard work, she achieved great success in her acting career in a short period of time.

In an interview, Kareena shared the story behind naming her son Taimur. She explained that the name “Taimur” was inspired by Saif Ali Khan’s childhood friend who lived in Mumbai. Kareena further revealed that Saif liked the name very much and that’s why they decided to name their eldest son Taimur. Karina said in an interview,
When we came up with the name…Saif actually said…he grew up with a neighbor friend who he always liked, his name was Taimur, so he said, ‘You know, If I had a son, he would be mine. First friend. She attended Jamnabai Narsee School in Mumbai and Welham Girls School in Dehradun. Later she furthered her studies at Mithibhai College, Mumbai. After graduation, she attended a three-month microcomputer summer course at Harvard Summer School in the United States. She then returned to India and studied law at the Government Law College, Bombay, but dropped out after a year to pursue an acting career. Later, she entered the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) for acting training. She trained under the guidance of Kishore Namit Kapoor.

In 2000, she made her debut with the movie “Refugee”, playing the protagonist Nazneen/Naaz M. Ahmed. For this film, she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.
