Kate Hudson’s son is her biggest protector.
Speaking to PEOPLE for this week’s cover story, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery the actress (45) spoke about her relationship with her son Ryder (20), who she shares with ex-husband Chris Robinson. Noting that now that her son is older the two have a real friendship, Hudson says she will always be his mom.
“But because I was young when I had him, it’s a different relationship than with my other kids. He’s seen me through all my good times and bad times, this guy, not that guy,” Hudson, who is releasing her debut album , Famouslyon Friday, May 17, he says.

Kate Hudson Celebrates Her ‘Patchwork Family’, Says Daughter Rani, Her Exes’ Kids Are ‘Like Sisters’ (Exclusive)
“He’s seen me through it all. And it’s very different because I’ve never had a grown-up life without him,” she notes of Ryder, who inspired the song “Live Forever” from Hudson’s album. “So it’s a little bit, I mean more protective, which means I think he’s very protective of me. And then I think my other kids will be, because we’ve been through so much together.”
“I mean, he was really my partner in crime and I never went anywhere without him,” the mom of three tells PEOPLE. “So it’s very, very close. And I think, yeah, he’s being protective.”
Along with Ryder, Hudson is mother to son Bingham, 12, with ex Matt Bellamy, 45, and daughter Rani, 5, with fiance Danny Fujikawa.
Elsewhere in the interview, Hudson talked about her “patchwork family,” noting that all of her children are very close.

“We’re very connected and we’re very close,” Hudson says. “Love can change shape. It’s interesting when you have that modern family; there is so much love for all children.”
“I think the thing that’s so unique about my life is that in this very colorful family, we’ve all figured it out… The kids feel like they have a big family,” Hudson continues, adding that her exes’ daughters and Rani “are like sisters… There is something that managed to be nurtured in our family, and I personally think that is very rare.”
The star took a minute to celebrate her close-knit family on Mother’s Day, sharing a Reel on her Instagram in honor of the spring holiday. The video flipped through photos of all three of Hudson’s children growing up and included footage of the actress from when she was pregnant.
“What do I love most? Well…that’s easy 🦋 Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there!” Hudson wrote in her caption. “To my beautiful children, thank you for making our lives crazy, fun, wild, enjoyable, loving and really really loud! I love being your mommy. You are my everything ❤️❤️❤️.”
