Jonathan Groff Says He's 'Ready and Open for Anything' After Being Single 'for a Couple of Years'

Jonathan Groff is ready to hang out.

The Broadway star, who recently earned her third Tony Award nomination for the revival We roll happily at the Hudson Theatre, opened the story of his romantic life in an Out magazine cover.

“I’ve been single for a few years now,” said Groff, 39. “I feel … ready and open to anything.”

As for his future status, he added: “If it continues, if it’s a relationship, I’m fine with it.”

Groff has kept his love affairs under wraps, as the cover story shows, but he has been linked to fellow theater stars Gavin Creel and Zachary Quinto in the past. His first boyfriend was recently at the play Merrily, per Outwhich the actor called a “full-circle moment.”

The Pennsylvania native revealed in 2023 that his coming out story included seeing Michelangelo David statue in person. “I started crying and asked myself, ‘What is it about that naked man that makes me so emotional?’ ” He said Condé Nast Traveler in that time.

“I decided to go out in front of my brother,” he recalled then. “Only my roommate knew I was gay because he was also my secret boyfriend.”

Happystarring Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Mendez, was a life-changing project for Groff, he said Out.

One of the lines from the musical by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth — “I’ve only made one mistake in my life. But I succeeded time and time again. It was saying ‘yes’ when I meant ‘no’. ” — resonated for him, he said. “Anybody who’s been incarcerated at some point can relate to a version of that…. This thing of presenting something that’s different than what’s going on inside felt super personal to me.”

The production, which started off-Broadway and transferred to hit Broadway, made the trio close friends. When Mendez, 41, married fellow actor J. Alex Brinson on April 22 in New York City, Radcliffe, 34, served as ring bearer while Groff was officiant.

“I really like living in this time and working this way,” Groff said Out. “It’s more than I could have ever dreamed of.”

Among Groff’s upcoming film projects is a film Nice Indian and episode of A doctor who is.
