The royal mother of three was taken to a London clinic yesterday for planned abdominal surgery.

It comes as King Charles sought treatment for an enlarged prostate.

A statement from Buckingham Palace said: “His Majesty’s condition is benign and he will go to hospital next week for a corrective procedure.

“The king’s public engagements will be postponed for a short period of recovery.

“In guidance: His Majesty wanted to share the details of his diagnosis to encourage other men who may be experiencing symptoms to get screened in line with public health advice.”

It is understood the monarch wanted to share details of his treatment to encourage other men to get checked.

The King had a series of meetings and events planned at Dumfries House in East Ayrshire for tomorrow and Friday, which have now been postponed on the advice of his doctor.

The guests who will come, including foreign dignitaries and members of the Government, have been informed about the situation.

Meanwhile, it is understood that Prince William was by Kate’s side yesterday but was unable to be there during the operation.

It is also believed to be the Prince’s first trip to hospital for his wife’s mysterious operation.

The operation was not for cancer, it is understood, but Kensington Palace will not speculate on a private medical matter.

Their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, are thought to have attended the school to keep things ‘as normal as possible’.

Sources said only that Kate was “fine” and that husband William was taking over the running of the school.

Kate is now expected to miss upcoming events including the BAFTAs on February 18 and the St David’s Day parade on March 1.

The mum-of-three is also expected to be absent from the St Patrick’s Day parade on March 17 and church on Easter Sunday on March 31.

She may also have to miss Prince Edward’s 60th birthday celebrations on March 10.

Police officers are now stationed outside the clinic while the princess recovers.

A statement from the palace read: “The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate.

“She hopes the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normalcy as possible for her children; and her desire to keep her personal medical information private.

“Kensington Palace will therefore only provide an update on Her Royal Highness’s progress when there is significant new information to share.

“The Princess of Wales would like to apologize to anyone who is concerned about the fact that she has to postpone her upcoming engagements.

“He’s looking forward to getting back as much as possible, as soon as possible.”

The princess was last seen performing royal duties with Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis at a Christmas church service in Sandringham.

Kate flashed a beaming smile at the crowd as she led her children into the service.

She looked sophisticated in a royal blue long Alexander McQueen coat and wore Princess Diana sapphire and diamond earrings.

The mum-of-three hasn’t been seen in public since Christmas.

Ever since Palace broke the news of the shock surgery on Xu, royal fans have been wishing the princess a speedy recovery.

“Praying for a speedy recovery for Catherine. Absolutely respect her need for privacy, we look forward to seeing her again when she is better,” wrote one concerned user.

Another wrote: “I wish Catherine a full and speedy recovery and fully respect her need for privacy.

“My thoughts and prayers are with her and her entire family.”

“14 days is a long time, I hope it’s good,” said another fan.

“Get well soon and we hope Catherine’s recovery goes smoothly,” agreed one of the many concerned well-wishers.

Someone else wrote: “Thinking of the whole family at this sad time for them and the country.”

What is an enlarged prostate?

The prostate is a small gland located in the pelvis between the penis and the bladder. If it enlarges, it can put pressure on the bladder and urethra – the tube through which urine passes. The medical term for an enlarged prostate is benign prostate enlargement (BPE). It can affect how you go to the toilet. You may notice that you have:

  • Difficulty starting to urinate
  • Frequent need to urinate, especially at night
  • Problems with complete emptying of the bladder
  • Low flow
  • Passing urine after you finish
  • A sudden urge to urinate

An enlarged prostate is very common in men over the age of 50. It is not cancerous and usually not serious, although some men need treatment to relieve symptoms. This may involve medication or surgery. Most sufferers are also encouraged to drink less alcohol and exercise more. The exact cause is unknown, but doctors believe it is related to hormonal changes caused by age. Complications are rare, but include urinary tract infections (UTIs), chronic urinary retention (when you cannot empty your bladder completely), and acute urinary retention (a sudden inability to urinate).
