Kate Middleton and Prince William’s Mental Health Survey Finds Most Young People Fear for Their Friends

Kate Middleton and Prince William share the results of a survey they carried out ahead of World Mental Health Day which found that almost all young people feel their friends struggle with mental health issues.

The survey, carried out by the Prince and Princess of Wales Royal Foundation, was carried out by 3,000 young people in the UK. According to the findings, 95% of 16-24 year olds say they think their peers have some sort of problem with their mental health.

The survey also showed that around 60% of participants think it is very important for young people to have a greater awareness and understanding of social and emotional skills. Additionally, 39% believe that they do not manage their emotions well.

The findings come as the couple and their Royal Foundation prepare to host a youth mental health forum in Birmingham on Tuesday on World Mental Health Day.

Teaming up with The Mix charity and BBC Radio 1, Exploring our emotional worlds will bring together 100 young people aged 16 to 24 who will take part in workshops with members of the royal family and discuss how they manage their emotions and how they can be helped to build their resilience.

Half of the participants were nominated by the National Citizen Service, which helps young people become world and work ready, and hopefully gives them the tools to make a difference in their communities.

At a meeting in Birmingham on Tuesday, 100 young people will join the royal family and other delegates in “a conversation about how they manage their emotions and how they can be helped to build their resilience and protective factors such as healthy relationships that make it easier to navigate bumps in the road as they go through life,” said the royal couple’s office at Kensington Palace.

It will feature “famous faces from Radio 1 and the wider mental health space” and provide space for young people “to talk about the specific mental health challenges facing their generation, explore what else they could do to understand and manage their emotions and discuss solutions that could support them to take better care of their own and others’ mental well-being,” added the palace.

Challenging the stigma of mental health, encouraging better understanding of mental health and addressing its effects, is one of William and Kate’s key areas of public work. It became widely associated with the couple when they joined Prince Harry in 2016 for the successful Heads Together campaign.
