Users have been asking for the Trending Topics feature since Threads launched in July of this year so they could easily locate the most popular conversation on Twitter/X competitor Meta. But right after Threads went live, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri told The Verge that the app’s purpose was to serve as a “public space for communities on Instagram,” not to take over Twitter’s role.

Furthermore, Mosseri stated, “I don’t want to imply otherwise, but politics and hard news are vital. But in my opinion, any additional engagement or money they could generate from a platform standpoint is not at all worth the attention, negativity (let’s be honest), or integrity issues that come with them. Many users jumped to the conclusion after reading Mosseri’s remarks that the trending topics feature, which has been widely used as a source of breaking news, politics and controversy on Twitter, may never be added to Threads. William Max, the app’s creator, revealed the new trending topics feature for the first time thanks to a screenshot provided by an anonymous Meta employee on Threads.
