Kate Middleton reveals she has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy, says it ‘took time’ to tell her children
On January 17, Kensington Palace announced that Princess Kate had undergone “planned abdominal surgery” the previous day. At the time, the problem was thought to be non-cancerous, but post-operative tests “determined that cancer was present”. The type of cancer was not detected.
A Kensington Palace spokesman said: “We will not be sharing any private medical information further. The Princess has a right to medical privacy, as do we all.”

In her emotional video, Princess Kate thanked well-wishers for their “wonderful messages of support” amid her recovery, which she called an “incredibly difficult few months for our whole family”.
“In January I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time my condition was thought to be non-cancerous,” she said. “The operation was successful. However, tests after the operation revealed the presence of cancer. My medical team therefore advised me to undergo preventive chemotherapy, and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.”
The Princess of Wales concluded her video by asking the public for privacy and patience as she undergoes treatment and recovery.
“We hope you will understand that we, as a family, need some time, space and privacy now while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to returning when I can, but for now I must focus on full recovery,” she said.
“At this time, I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been touched by cancer. To all who are dealing with this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone.”
