Kate Middleton’s Controversial Uncle Joins Celebrity Big Brother and Spills on How He First Met Prince William

Kate Middleton’s uncle talks about the first meeting with the future King of England.

In the new promotional video for the upcoming season Celebrity Big Brother UK, The Princess of Wales’s uncle Gary Goldsmith — who will appear in Season 23, hosts AJ Odudu and Will Best announced Monday — talked about his niece and meeting Prince William for the first time.

“She’s just perfect,” Goldsmith, 58, said of Kate short clip. “The first time I met William, Catherine was cooking and William said, ‘Hi, would you like a cup of tea?'”

“Very normal,” Goldsmith recalled with a laugh.

Kensington Palace had no comment when reached by PEOPLE.

The London businessman has been candid about media portrayals of the royal family before. In January, Fr Crownportrayed his sister and her family, calling parts of the Netflix series “funny and fantastic.”

“Really, I really enjoyed the first few episodes and the first series Crownbut it just seems to drift off into this fantasy world,” Goldsmith said on the podcast The Crown: Fact or Fiction. “There are so many parts of it that I don’t agree with, and I think the story is also an attempt to make headlines and watch audiences. So when it started to get ridiculous and fantastical, it was very hard to watch, so I stopped.”

Goldsmith also took a moment to address his previous controversies in the Celebrity Big Brother UK place.

“I often read that people think I’m a bit of a bad guy,” he said. “It would be nice to clear everything up, but cheering people on is probably my favorite hobby. Every part of me is imbued with mischief and danger.”

“I’m an absolute nightmare to live with,” he joked, adding: “There’s a reason I’ve had four wives.”

Princess mother Carole Middleton’s brother sparked controversy after he was arrested in 2017 for assaulting his fourth and current wife Julie-Ann during an argument outside their London home. According to prosecutors, the couple had been arguing after a drunken night out and Goldsmith punched his wife, causing her to hit her head on the ground.

“I watched Big Brother – That was the one show I said I’d never do,” he finished, before letting out a bird cry.

The businessman is set to join fellow contestants Sharon Osbourne, Louis Walsh, ex Island of love winner of Ekin-Su, Netflix’s Heartstopper actor Bradley Riches and more for the new, renewed ITV series.

New season of Celebrity Big Brother UK debuted on ITV on Monday.
