Katherine Legge Gives Her Secret to Success in Empowering Pep Talk: 'Believe in Yourself First'

Katherine Legge knows that the road to success begins with self-love.

The race car driver, 43, has teamed up with elf Cosmetics and PEOPLE to empower others to reach their full potential in the new cheer.

“You’re capable of doing hard things. You’re capable of doing the right things. And you have to believe in yourself first, and then you can go and lift others up,” says Legge, whose car in the upcoming Indy 500 is sponsored by a cosmetics brand.

While applying some of Elf’s products (including Holy Hydration! Face Cream and Glow Reviver Lip Oil), Legge explains that looking and feeling good has allowed her to perform better on the racetrack.

“So even when we’re traveling at 230 mph, we can still feel good. I may be the only woman in the Indy 500, but I’m not the only woman in the driving scene,” she says.

“I’m so happy that Elf empowered me to live my dream, and they can empower you to be the best version of you,” Legge continues. “So get out there, get in the race, show yourself and everyone else what you’re capable of.”

It’s no surprise that Legge is focused on becoming the best version of herself as she is set to compete in the upcoming Indy 500 on Sunday, May 26, in what will be her fourth appearance at the major event.

After qualifying for the race last weekend, Legge shared her excitement on Instagram, writing: “Got 31st in our pretty pink @elfcosmetics @hondaracing_us @dalecoyneracing machine. It was a stressful day but collectively (as a team) we is on the field. Now to our race to find some speed and safety!… Proud of teammate @nolansiegel for leaving nothing on the table and getting every ounce of speed out of his car 🫶🏼”

While speaking with PEOPLE last May about her career, Legge said she hopes to continue to inspire a new generation of women.

“I’m a normal person following my dreams, just like anyone else, right? My dreams are maybe a little different than a lot of people,” she said. “But by the same token, I’m here trying to do the best job I can regardless of gender and regardless of all the other things.”
