Kathy Bates had an emotional experience preparing for the 2024 Emmys on September 15.
After losing 100 pounds over the past seven years, the actress, 76, tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue, on newsstands Friday, that she “was able to go” to Giorgio Armani for the first time “in a long time” to find a dress for the evening.
While trying on dresses, Bates says she and a friend who joined her for the rehearsal “were in tears because everything I walked out in just looked amazing.”
In the end, Bates settled on a dark purple dress with black beading. When the big night rolled around, “the red carpet pictures were so different from any red carpet pictures I’ve ever taken,” she says.
“I felt so relaxed and ready,” she continues. “I knew I felt great, and I looked great. We had a great little skit with Antony [Starr] and Giancarlo [Esposito]. It was a wonderful night. That evening was really special.”

While on the red carpet, Bates also got to know each other Shogun star Anna Sawai, who broke down in tears when Bates praised her work.
“I was amazed that she got so emotional, or that she even knew about my work,” Bates says. “She was so great in there [Shōgun]. Meeting her was a real treat for me.”

Bates — who currently stars in the busy CBS Matlock reboot — was first inspired to get serious about her health when she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes around 2017.
“It honestly scared me,” she says.
The first change Bates made in her lifestyle was to follow the advice her niece gave her about listening to her body.
“When we’re full, we involuntarily sigh,” she explains. “I just pushed the plate away.”

She also changed her diet – she admits: “I ate terribly: hamburgers, Coke and pizza” – and stopped eating after 8 p.m.
By changing her lifestyle and diet, Bates was able to lose 80 pounds. She lost another 20 pounds on Ozempic.
“There was a lot of talk that I was only able to do it because of Ozempic,” says Bates. “But I have to impress upon people out there that this has been a tough job for me, especially during the pandemic. It’s very hard to say you’ve had enough.”
Kathy Bates clarifies that she is not retiring Matlockova Success: ‘I’d like to see this continue’ (Exclusive)
Bates says her next challenge is figuring out a workout routine now that she’s finished her freshman season Matlock.
“That will be my next thing to worry about because I won’t be on set running back and forth,” she says. “I have a treadmill here at the house, and I might try pilates. People always ask, ‘Don’t you want a trainer?’ No, I really don’t want anyone over my shoulder, it’s just important to keep this going.”

Her weight loss, she says, “coincided wonderfully” with time Matlock.
“I’m physically capable of doing this show,” she says. »I don’t have to sit down. I can stand all day and walk and move and breathe and do so many things I couldn’t do before.”
Kathy Bates shocked after realizing she actually thanked mum in Oscars speech: ‘What a relief’
While Bates recently made headlines for the statement Matlock was her “last dance” after a five-decade career, she clarifies that she is not yet ready to step down from the industry.
“I think people got confused and thought I was going to retire,” she says. “I wanted to say how could it be better? I would like this to continue.”
