Katie Thurston and John Hersey from The Bachelorette tried everything to mend their love, but after seven months of dating, the two announced on June 20 that they were splitting up. Katie is now opening up about her tumultuous relationship, saying it was her ex-boyfriend John Hersey who “freaked her out”. Katie Thurston opened up about the split on Vine, the Bachelor Nation podcast hosted by Kaitlyn Bristowe, on Tuesday, August 23, and said:
“He rejected me. In fact, we really broke up twice. No one knew about it the first time… We worked on it and agreed to get back together a week or two later, so I believed we were ready.”

Katie is now opening up about why her relationship with John ended two months ago. Katie noted on the show that being in a relationship is hard and went on to explain the key reason behind her breakup with John. She said John needed someone to share his interests with him and “maybe learn to surf” with him. Katie was irritated by his suggestion. She said,
“I jumped out of a fucking plane three times… to share his interests.” Eight hours of elementary school, all for him to participate in his love, and that was completely neglected, and now we’re focused on surfing.”
Katie even gave him a van to show how important he was in her life, and she tried to change for John, but nothing could save their relationship. She dropped it all:
“I bought him a freaking vacation van.” I allowed this person to resign from the job. ‘Whatever you want me to be, I will be,’ I said. In retrospect, that’s neither healthy nor helpful. But it’s kind of rude to say, “Hell, I gave you everything and this isn’t working.”

Katie met John as a contestant on The Bachelorette during her season. He was kicked off the reality dating show in week two, but the two reconciled after The Bachelor ended. Before the relationship, the two were friends. They announced their relationship in November, just one month after Katie called off her engagement to season winner Blake Moynes in October 2021, three months after The Bachelorette finale aired.
Despite “a lot of public criticism about the circumstance”, Katie continued with John. They divorced after only a few months of dating. The Washington native admitted she was “in denial at first” after the split. She continued,
“It just surprised me and I put all my eggs in one basket with this guy and I don’t want to say I regret it because I believe every relationship is a lesson, but it was just six months of crash and burn.”
Despite the divorce, the 31-year-old star of The Bachelorette claims that she is in a good place today.
