Ke Huy Quan Says The Goonies Is Still ‘Loved by Generations’ Almost 40 Years Later: Fans 'Get So Emotional' (Exclusive)

Ke Huy Quan knows nothing about the official sequel Goonies. But he’s always tickled by the idea when it pops up.

“It never fails,” he tells PEOPLE with a laugh. “Every few years, there’s always Goonies [sequel] rumor.”

The classic adventure film, directed by Richard Donner, written by Chris Columbus and story by Steven Spielberg, starred Quan, 54, alongside a cast of other young adventurers: Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton and more.

Released by Warner Bros. June 7, 1985 Goonies “means a lot” to generations of audiences, Quan says. “It’s their childhood. It’s one of the greatest adventures you can go on — find the treasure map and go on this adventure with your best friends, pirate ships, water slides.”

Fans keep coming up to him to “tell me how much they love our movie,” Quan says. “The film will live on. Because the fans who grew up watching this movie, a lot of them are married and have kids and are introducing their kids to the movie.”

He continues: “I’ve been approached so many times over the years, and when they talk about this film, they get so emotional because it’s a film that connects the relationship between parents and their children. When they can share that wonderful experience of watching for the first time, there is that connection between parents and their children. And I just love it.”

About the upcoming anniversary, he adds: “I can’t believe that almost 40 years have passed. It changed all of our lives.”

On Thursday, Oct. 17, Brolin, 56, was on stage answering questions about his acting career at New York Comic Con when Quan and Cohen, 50, posed their own questions in a video message: “What’s your favorite memory from filming Goonies?” and “Who’s your favorite Goonie?”

Brolin called watching the giant pirate ship “Inferno” his favorite memory from filming. As for his favorite actor, he replied that “they’re all my favorites” – but saluted Quan, because he “came back and won an Oscar, man.”

Plimpton, 53, recently denied that a Goonies a sequel is in the works, writing on Instagram, “Folks, no Goonies2 script, no one ‘attached’, Spielberg not directing, not real.”

She added in the post, “What IS real is CHECK YOUR REGISTRATION AND VOTE!!!!”

Quan leads next Love hurts (in theaters February 7, 2025), and will appear in Joe and Anthony Russo’s Electric state (on Netflix March 14, 2025), give voice to a character Zootopia 2 (in theaters November 26, 2025) and star in an action thriller A fairy tale in New York.
