Kelly Rowland Says She’s ‘Proud’ of JAY-Z Calling Out Grammys Over Beyoncé’s Lack of Best Album Wins

Kelly Rowland is protecting JAY-Z.

The singer, 42, gave her two cents on the hip-hop artist’s comments at the Grammys on Sunday, which called out the awards show for the fact that Beyoncé has never won album of the year, the awards’ top honor.

“I don’t want to shame this young lady, but she has more Grammys than anyone and she’s never won album of the year,” JAY-Z said while accepting Dr. Dre Global Impact Award and questioned the voting process for the award. “So even by your own standards, it’s not working. Think about it. Most Grammys, never won album of the year. That doesn’t work.”

On Tuesday, Rowland addressed the rapper’s comments, saying Party tonight“Shawn Carter is one of the greatest people I know, and his words ring so loud to me.”

She said she “couldn’t be more proud” of JAY-Z, 54, adding: “I’m just really happy about a lot of the things he’s said. I think he made a lot of artists feel seen and heard in those minutes he spent on stage.”

The former Destiny’s Child member clarified that, as the “Empire State of Mind” rapper said, “it’s no disrespect,” before paying tribute to her former bandmate.

“I feel like she’s an icon,” Rowland said of Beyoncé, 42, who was up for nine awards at Sunday’s show and added four wins to her belt.

“She’s innovative, her thoughts are big and bright and she just jumps in and does it. I think her albums are a reflection of that and she should really be celebrated in that way,” Rowland added of Beyoncé.

JAY-Z’s comments at Sunday’s show echoed those he made at last year’s Grammys, where Beyoncé lost out for album of the year to Harry Styles Harry’s house. It was her fourth nomination, after losing in 2010 to I’m … Sasha Fiercein 2015 for her self-titled album and in 2017 for Lemonade.

Elsewhere in JAY-Z’s Grammys speech, while accepting the second annual Dr. Dre Global Impact, also called out his daughter Blue Ivy, who joined him on stage.

The father-of-three also joked that his eldest child, 12, was as “nervous” as he was about being on stage as he finished his speech.

“In life, you have to keep showing up,” JAY-Z said. “Forget the Grammys — you have to show up until you get all the accolades you think you deserve. Until they call you president, until they call you a genius, until they call you the greatest of all time. Do you feel me?”
