Kevin Costner Is ‘Relieved’ He and Estranged Wife Christine Settled Their Divorce (Exclusive)

Kevin Costner is “relieved” to put his contentious divorce behind him.

PEOPLE confirmed Tuesday that the 68-year-old Oscar winner and his estranged wife Christine, 49, have reached an agreement four and a half months after she filed for divorce on May 1.

“Kevin is relieved that this matter has been resolved and will continue to focus solely on raising their three children together,” a source told PEOPLE.

The couple, who were married for 18 years, have sons Cayden, 16, and Hayes, 14, and daughter Grace, 13.

The terms of their settlement were not immediately clear, but TMZ, which first broke news of the resolution, reported that Christine will receive more than was stipulated in the couple’s prenuptial agreement. According to previous court documents that mentioned the prenup, the former model was entitled to about $1.5 million.

That the Costners were able to reach an “amicable” settlement is somewhat of a surprise, given the bitter battle they’ve been waging through their lawyers over the past few months.

In June, Kevin accused Christine of refusing to leave the Santa Barbara beach compound — worth an estimated $145 million — where the two were raising their children. He claimed she violated their prenuptial agreement, which stated she must move out of their home within 30 days if she filed for divorce.

Since then, they have fought over several issues, including the amount of child support Kevin should pay; Christine’s move out date; and which household items she had the right to remove from the house when she left the premises.

Eventually, in August, she moved into a $40,000-a-month rental house not far from Kevin’s property.

During a two-day court hearing in Santa Barbara to determine child support in late August and early September, the judge set the monthly payments Kevin will pay Christine at $63,209, matching his proposed amount after she and her attorneys requested $175,057, in compared to the $129,755 the actor was previously ordered to temporarily pay.

Both Kevin and Christine took the stand to present their case, and after the hearing, the judge wrote in a court filing explaining that while he found Christine “credible,” he believed the higher child support could be “disguised spousal support.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Kevin’s rep confirmed the couple had reached an agreement in a joint statement from the divorcing couple.

“Kevin and Christine Costner have reached an amicable and mutually agreeable resolution of all matters relating to their divorce proceedings,” their rep said in a joint statement previously obtained by PEOPLE.

Ahead of news of their settlement, the exes were scheduled to appear in court again this November to determine the validity of their prenuptial agreement.
