Khan Mubarak (1978-2023) was an Indian gangster and a close aide of underworld kingpin Chhota Rajan. His sphere of influence spread over several districts, including Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Ambedkar Nagar and Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh. In 2023, Khan died of dehydration while being treated at Hadoy District Hospital; his death was due to complications from a lung infection and pneumonia.

Khan Mubarak’s dark descent
Khan Mubarak entered the world of crime during his tenure at Allahabad University in Uttar Pradesh. His first big performance came during a cricket match, when he shot the umpire after being declared out. His brother Zafar Supari was instrumental in leading Mubarak down this path. At the age of 15, Zafar entered the field of crime and later formed a relationship with notorious underworld figure Chhota Rajan. Encouraged by his brother, Mubarak began working under Rajan’s chairmanship. Chhota Rajan’s main opponent is Indian politician Munna Bajrangi, a well-known hitman and gang leader from eastern Uttar Pradesh. In 2006, on Rajan’s instructions, Mubarak planned to rob a post office in Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh. His plot was disrupted by an alert security guard, who fired back. Despite this, Mubarak managed to fight back and escape. Tensions between Mubarak and Bajrangi increased when Mubarak demanded extortion of rupees. A doctor near Bajrangi provided 25 pieces of information. This sparked a fierce gang war between the two men. Police scrutiny has since intensified, forcing Mubarak to relocate to Mumbai, where he took refuge with his brother Zafar Supari.
2006 Karagoda shootout
Khan Mubarak was later named in the sensational Kala Ghoda shootout in Mumbai in 2006. The incident revolves around drug traffickers Amjad Khan and Himanshu Chaudhary, who were involved with famous underworld figure Chhota Rajan. Initially, they borrowed Rs. Ahjaz Pathan, a close associate of Chhota Rajan, gave 50 but later returned the money and got married to Rajan’s rival Dawood Ibrahim (Dawood Ibrahim) join forces. Later, Amjad Khan and Himanshu Chaudhary were arrested by the police in connection with the case. To take revenge, Pathan begged Chota Rajan to eliminate them. Rajan entrusted the task to his close associates Zafar Supari and Rajesh Yadav, who were joined by Khan Mubarak. On October 16, 2006, Khan Mubarak and other gunmen launched an attack on a van carrying Amjad Khan and Himanshu Chaudhry to a hearing in the Kala Ghoda District Court. According to sources, the incident known as the “Karagoda Shootout” involved Bacha Parsi, Osama Khan, Nikkar Kumar, Neeraj Valmiki, Zafar Su Parry and Khan Mubarak, among others.
Arrests and other cases
The first FIR case registered against Khan Mubarak was the murder case that took place at Andheri police station in Mumbai. He was first arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) in 2007 after his involvement in a cash truck robbery in Allahabad (now known as Prayagraj) in Uttar Pradesh. The incident took place on May 15, 2007, resulting in the death of two guards and two assailants, Saurav Sinha and Vinayranjan Gupta. During the investigation into the cash truck robbery, Khan admitted his involvement in the Kala Ghoda shootout. In 2011, a reward of Rs 10 lakh was placed on Chhota Rajan’s associate Osama Khan. 5 people were ruthlessly eliminated. According to sources, Osama had switched allegiance to Daoud Ibrahim’s gang, prompting Rajan to order Zafar Supari to plot Osama’s overthrow. Supari, however, entrusted the task to Khan Mubarak, who was imprisoned in Naini Central Jail in Uttar Pradesh. Khan Mubarak planned Osama’s death in prison and commissioned Rajesh Yadav to carry out the deadly operation. Khan was released in 2012 after five years in Naini prison. Mubarak immediately resumed his illegal activities. He carried out blackmail and extortion in Ambedkar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. In the same year, he killed Ainuddin, a brick merchant who ignored his demands. In 2014, Mubarak seized a plot of land by murdering its owner, a real estate agent named Mohan Yadav. In 2016, he shot and killed his own gunman, Sheru Alam. Despite numerous run-ins with the law, Mubarak always seemed to get away with it. In 2016, Mubarak reportedly plotted to assassinate Jugram Mehdi, leader of the Popular Socialist Party (BSP), although Mehdi survived the attempt. However, the incident led to the arrest of Khan Mubarak in 2017 by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) from Lucknow. However, according to sources, Mubarak successfully executed a plan to kill Jugram from his cell the following year. That is 2018. He was brought to Hardoi Jail from Maharajganj Central Jail on June 2, 2022. Mubarak was included in the list of 31 mafia and gangsters in Uttar Pradesh. His impact is widespread, covering multiple districts, including Ambedkar Nagar in Uttar Pradesh with 31 cases and Allahabad (now Prayagraj) with six cases; he also faces three cases in Mumbai.

Khan Mubarak passed away on June 13, 2023 at Hadoy Regional Hospital. According to officials, he suffered from a lung infection and pneumonia while being held in Hardoi jail in Uttar Pradesh. Although he received initial treatment at the prison hospital, his condition required transfer to an area hospital for more comprehensive care.

- Khan Mubarak was tech-savvy and pro-British. He has a deep love for firearms. According to officials, Khan owned 15 types of handguns and could shoot with both hands simultaneously.
- He was reportedly one of the first criminals to use virtual numbers, mostly from West Asia, to target businessmen and doctors for extortion.
- In 2017, a video of Khan went viral, in which he could be seen shooting an empty bottle over the head of a trader named Baju Khan, who had been outspoken about objected to Khan’s criminal behavior and urged other traders not to pay him extortion money.
- In 2018, a video featuring Khan Mubarak in Faizabad jail attracted national attention. In the video, Mubarak claimed he was provoked and confronted by police. He further stated that any injury he suffered would have serious consequences for the country’s military and law enforcement officials.
- Apart from Khan’s involvement in various crimes, members of his family have also been arrested for their involvement in criminal activities. In 2022, his sister and niece were arrested by Tanda Kotwali police. Authorities revealed that Khan’s niece and sister oversaw the financial operations of Khan Mubarak’s gang. They facilitate transactions and provide assistance to Khan’s colleagues through digital payment systems.
- On July 13, 2022, Khan’s brother-in-law’s property was destroyed by the Uttar Pradesh government.
