In April, the youthful North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un abruptly vanished, sparking concern and rumours around the world. Kim had not been spotted since leading a Politburo meeting on April 11 until appearing to reappear in state-sponsored media images on Friday. He was noticeably missing during the April 15 yearly celebration of his grandfather’s birthday. The holiday, sometimes referred to as “Day of the Sun,” is the most significant occasion on the political calendar of North Korea.
The leader was AWOL, and there were many unfounded rumours about his health. Despite claims in the North Korean media to the contrary, there were reports that Kim was recovering from heart surgery at his property in Wonsan, had contracted the coronavirus, or was under quarantine.
Because there are so many uncertainties around what would happen if he were to pass away or even become critically ill, his departure was a significant reason for anxiety.
A rapid change in the so-called Hermit Kingdom could lead to severe insecurity on the Korean peninsula, or it could pave the path for North and South Korea’s eventual reunification. We simply don’t know, and that is the issue. Strategic planning does not use hope, especially when creating plans to deal with a dictatorship that is in possession of nuclear weapons.
Although Kim has vanished before, it was unexpected that he chose to skip out on this big worldwide upheaval. World leaders are not in a particularly upbeat frame of mind following a failed attempt to negotiate a nuclear agreement with the Trump administration, amid a pandemic and growing worries over North Korea’s food supplies.
The idea that Kim Il Sung, the country’s founder and young Kim’s grandfather, was practically a god, and that his successors have maintained the cult of personality, is what gives the North Korean regime its very legitimacy. North Korea without a successor from the Kim family would be similar to people attending church without a god to worship, according to a recent article by Jieun Baek in The National Interest.
The DPRK Ten Principles for the Establishment of the One-Ideology System further emphasise the significance of the Kim family lineage. Because the government has been passed down via the family for the past 70 years, internal stability is strongly dependent on a successful transition to a new leader.
Kim Yo Jong, Kim’s sister, seems to be the most likely candidate to succeed him. She was promoted by him to deputy director of the Party Central Committee, and she was a key representative of North Korea at both the nuclear talks with President Donald Trump and the 2018 Winter Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.
